Ok, bring on the abuse and the lectures!

So, I have been looking around and haven't seen any posts on this idea. I'm assuming for some reason it isn't a great idea, or people would be doing it as I am sure I am not the first to think of it.
So, here is the question.
Has anyone ever tried using disposable aluminum pie pans or large broiling pans for reflectors for MH lighting???
I know you are thinking..."she's crazy".......So why won't it work?
LMK what ya think.
(Jimvette, got you're email will send pics this weekend)
Also, finally got my "SCWD" will put together refuge and plumb this weekend. Will post pics and look for suggestions on return, and all.

I believe the heat produced by the metal Halide bulbs would be a fire hazard,
polished stainless steel or a more approved reflector would be better.

Not to argue, just curious! How hot do MH lamps get (175w)? Have only had compact flourescents til now. Had already thought about the heat. I know you can leave these things in the oven on 350-400 degrees for hours. It doesn't hurt them and when you pull them out they cool in hardly anytime at all. Also, in my job we use a (weedburner) torch to heat the glue and remove alumimiun (foil) tape from the road. It burns the glue, but doesn't effect the foil. Stainless steel, however, (I believe) absorbs heat and will stay hot for an extended period of time.
I guess it doesn't matter as I will most likely buy reflectors. Am too afraid to try it. Anyone have a suggestion on a good reflector to buy for the mogul sockets shown above??

Good point about the pie pans but try leaving them in the oven for 10 hours a day 365 days a year and see what happens.( or fill in the above with how ever long you keep your MH lights on)
I will check with my infrared thermometer and get back to you on the actual temp of a mogul base MH, but I'm sure its too hot to touch.
If a pie pan would work, and since it is cheap, why don't the leading manufacturers use them.
I could be wrong on the stainless steel I was just trying to suggest a material that would be a little more hardy than a pie pan.
After all, we all just want to be safe.
Right?

You might be on to something about the metal tape, need to check what temperature it can withstand. Just worried about the glue backing on the tape.Don't want it to melt and drop on the light.

Absolutely, Jim. I appreciate your opinion. The other advantage to store bought reflectors is getting a glass or plastic cover to protect the lamps.

Anyone have a recommendation on which kind to get??

Had a lot going on and not much to update except that I installed SCWD and built some DIY spray bars. several 11/64 holes most pointing straight forward. some angled up and some angled down. Placing them about 3 inches from top of tank. One on each side. Do you think they will work???

(Jimvette I sent an email with pics. of ballasts)

Also, (if I ever get them working) I will have 175w MH (8 all together)
2 units that run 3 bulbs and 1 unit that runs 2 bulbs. I was thinking about running the one with 2 bulbs 20000k for morning and evening and spacing a three bulb unit with 10k or 14k for daytime lites. Do you think this would be good for any coral?? Look good?? Too much?? Too little?? LMK
Also, still looking for reflectors, and any advice on mounting these. Anyone have pictures of theirs?? Thanks again for your help!

Welcome to the boards! You are right, you can't pm cause you are new. Not sure what changes that, but you should be able to before long!
Thank you very much. I did get my ballasts wired. JimVette1 took alot of time out of his life and I drilled the rivots out to get inside box. With his help we figured it out.
So, let me know if you need help with yours.

haha... alright... so i know that red, orange, and yellow are the power feeds to each of the three bulbs... and that the white is the common shared between the three bulbs... and that the green is the ground which i believe in my setup is grounded thru the reflector... but... what is the black wire? it was capped off when i rewired my system to run only two bulbs...
