1st Reef Tank Diary (55g)

Thanks alot guys! The tank has come along way this year. It is my first attempt at a reef and so far I'm very happy! I have only had a few small problems with some zoapox and nudis on a few polyp colonies, but other than that all of my corals have thrived.
I reccomend the different types of coral that I have in my tank as far as ease of care. As you can see I have mostly softies with my shrooms, xenia, polyps and leather toadstool. I have more recently added the couple of LPS in my candy cane, open brain and hammer coral. I think I'm getting pretty close to being done adding corals for a while now. I'll just let what I have set in and hopefully thrive.
The only thing that I do to the tank other than regular water changes is add Reef Builder Alk buffers and Purple up for Calcium everyother day. It is rather self-sustaining. I am having a great time with it.
The only bad thing is my tank makes me want to move into another house where the tank can be set up in the family room so I can watch it more often!!
I never thought to include the purchase price of a new house in the running costs of a 55g reef

Your tank is looking great!

It's amazing how we start figuring out how our next house needs to be in order to display our tank (or tanks).

You have got that right AZfishgirl!! I cannot wait for a new house that I can display my tank!!

Here are some updates , folks!
I have added at least a few LPS to the mix.
Here is a new FTS:

Here are a few new additions: green open brain, red/green montestrea, crocea clam and what I assume is some sort of favia (the bright green lps which I got sent to me free)

And the zoo garden with the addition of a new large zoo frag which I love..

My Foxface is doing quite well actually. He is a survivor of a bout of Ich that hit the tank almost a year ago. He is a fighter! He's doing very well, is active and eats like crazy.
I was unaware that a 55g was a bit too small for a Foxface when I got him. From what I can tell he is doing very well. I do plan on upgrading to a 75 gallon when we sell our house and move. However, in this market, who knows when that will be

What kind of filtration do you have on it? Nice tank by the way!
Thanks for the compliment!
Right now I still have a wet/dry with bio-balls. I'm thinking of getting rid of the wet/dry in the future for just a sump with some rubble.
I have a Coralife SS 65 skimmer that is working very well for me at the moment. I have a Koralia 3 PH in the tank for water movement.
It is definatly not the most sophisticated setup in the word by any means!

i see your into music. i love music too haha. sorry that didnt have anything to do with fish
No problem, I'm a huge music fan. That is my other obession besides the tank. I'm actually less obessed with the tank now that it is pretty much set up and for the most part fully stocked. I think I have come close to maxing out the room in my 55g.
That is why it is time to upgrade to a 75 or 90!!!

I have a 55 gal with the same exact stand and canopy and want to upgrade my flourescents to t5's. I'm curious about how well they fit into that canopy, could you post a picture of that for me?
I also have a wet/dry and a coralife 65. How big is your return pump?

Right on man. I'll post an image tonight of my canopy with the T-5's. I have a TEK Retrofit kit with 4 bulbs for a total of 216 watts. The lights fit into the canopy perfectly. I cut out a few spots in the individual reflectors to install some lunars.
I love the light set up as it definatly is working for what I want in the tank, LPS and softies.
I'm not sure of the GPH of the return pump in the sump, I'll have to check that out as well.
I'll get the images up soon.

you got some GSP started i see......mine started off tiny but then overtook a whole huge rock, i love it though, alot of people hate it growing nuts, but its soo relaxing to watch it sway in the current.
nice looking 55 by the way

Hey, thanks alot for the compliment. I actually really like the GSP as well. I'm with you as far as I love to see it swaying in the current. I'm working a bit on keeping it trimmed up so that it stays just on the one large rock that it is on currently. I don't want it to crowd the other corals. I would be perfectly happy if it just took over that big rock it is currently on though!
