2 pumps one return?

Can you hook up two different return pumps to one return line to increase the volume? Will this work? Will the more powerful pump overpower the little pump, or will they work together? It would be tied together with a Tee.

Yes you could run them inline to increase flow, by how much I really don't know. You will loose a lot by going through the second pump, as you might guess there is lots of friction inside a pump. However, fire crews do this from time to time. We call it relay pumping ( makes sense ). Bascially you have one pumper pumping into the intake of the second truck. We usually do this when the hydrant has a very low pressure.

I was thinking about two sump pumps. Both in the sump, next to eachother, and then tied together right before they go into the return pipe in the tank.

I guess you could do that, just make sure of two things. First, that you have the proper fitting sizes of pvc after the two streams meet up. Second, that you don't over push more water than your overflow can handle.
Question for ya, why not just get a bigger pump? If you are worried about one dying, just put a union right above the male slip fitting so you can easily change out the pump when and if it dies.

It would best to run each return pump on it's own individual returnline.
Depending on the backpressure - you could actually loose efficiency of each pump.
If one pump is stronger than the other - it will work against the other.
Running a centrifugal pump ( like our hobby pumps ) into another pump ~ meaning running the discharge of one pump into the inlet of the next pump, is not too wise either.
You really want a clear unobstructed flowpath on the inlet.
I wouldn't do it ~ I would run separate returnlines from each pump.

I have two pumps and two return lines. I would not recommend using two pumps and only one return line. Is there a reason you do not want two return lines?

My tank only has holes in the overflows for 1 return line. The way it was made is one two overflows, but only one hole in each one. Don't know why they did it this way. I have 150 gal. with a Rio 3100, and 2500 on it right now. Could I just use the 3100, and would this be enough for a tank this size? FOWLR?
