Looks like the light penetrates about 3/4 of an inch through the sand. These pics do it no justice. I will use the camera later to get some good pics.

I think the cycle has started I tested the ammonia yesterday and it was .30 so now it should start the process. Let's hope I don't need a full 30 day cycle.

Trust me I know to wait the 30 days! It just sucks to wait it out I have been in the hobby for about 10 years now so I have a good idea but not everything to do. On another note I wanted to test the water tonigh to ensure the nitrification process had begun and the readings were as follows.
Ammonia= .25
Nitrite= >1 off the charts high
Nitrates= over 50 ppm low end
PH= 8.6
So I think it looks like everything is going well there is plenty of food to start the process at each level for the bacteria.

OK WTF?
The tank has been cycling for a month now and the thing still isn't done or there is something wrong with the tests that I have.
Ammonia .25 ppm
Nitrite .2 ppm
Nitrate 20 ppm
PH 8.4
Alkalinity is good
Why in the world am I still getting the same readings for over 2 weeks in a row? There has been 0 progress with ammonia at all and it seems like the others are progressing very very slowly. The SG is 1.024 tested it with a Refractometer. Any ideas? The test is a Red Sea multi-test kit any problems with this brand?

Red Sea tests are GARBAGE.
Go get yourself the SeaChem Mutil Test or API. Most LFS's carry API and use API to test your water, even ***** does, try having them double check your water tests for you.
Keep in mind that a beginning cycle can take as long as 2 months.

I bought the test kit from Petsmart figured it would be ok but I guess I was wrong. I am going to take some water to the LFS today see what's up.

Ok just returned from LFS and the test I was using were bad.
All of my stuff tested at 0 and PH and everything else was perfect. I decided to purchase a small CUC for the tank because I will be out of town for the next couple of weeks so they can do some maintenance for me while I am gone. I bought 5 hermits 2 ceriths, 3 turbos, 2 margaritas. Also there was a guy that was trying to sell some corals that the LFS didn't want so I bought them. Frogspawn, candy cane in bad shape, brown star polyps, small Jasmine Polyp frag, small montipora frag, and some brown button polyps for $40. the frogspawn looks good everything else is ok. He was keeping all of that under PC lighting and it wasn't doing so well. I will post pics later if I get time. I feel much better and I am getting ready to go exchange this test kit. Thanks.

Man I am lucky! After I went and exchanged my test kit my wife and I went to dinner at this Thai place and the owner had the most amazing 300 gal reef. I was talking with him and he had xenia all over the place and so I offered to buy some from him but he said I will give you some for free then he asked if I wanted some duncans as well because he had too many he gave me a 16 head duncan and the xenia for free as well as some neon green zoanthids. I have to go to VA beach early tomorrow for training but I will post pics when I return. I retested my water with my new API tests and everything is perfect. What a day!!!!
