I'm dismantling my 55 as we speak and i'm setting up a 29 in a few days... I'm acutally going to upgrade the lighting as i downgrade the tank. I'll be using 2 75W VHO actinics and a 175W MH 12000K. I'll let you know how it looks as soon as it's up.

You could do a single 175w MH. If you use a 20K bulb you may not need any actinic supplimentation.(depends on if you like it very blue) If your willing to build your own hood, then you might be able to do it for under $150 inluding the bulb.
It would only be another $30 or so for some PC supplimentation and then you would have the option of the MH.

I ran a pair of 75w VHO's and a 175MH on my 29 and loved it. It's actually temporarily supporting my 75 now with NP besides my SPS which a friend is babysitting.
The vhos alone will do a pretty good job. With a WH7 you can DIY VHO for just over $100
I don't know if the hamilton 14ks are available in a 175 but they have a great color w/o supplementation. Thats what I'll be using on the 75g

MH's are best ofcourse but for the corals your talking about zoos, my guess is you want some xinia and other softys you can make it good with PC's I have 130watts on my 29 and everything is doing good to great....including some montipora SPS which is showing new growth within 2 weeks. But remember everything will look better under a metal halide.
Good luck with the tank.

Viper.....Clams I would agree...anenomies I would agree but thier are several low light corals that don't need a metal halide. Mushrooms, zoos, xinia, GSP's Yes they would benifit greater with more lighting but its not a need.
4-5watts a gallon and you will be ok

He said he wants to be able to put in anything he wants. Said that in his second post on this thread. Almost all SPS corals will not be able to live and thrive on PC lighting, only MH.
And watts per gallon is not a good rule to go by. It depends on light intensity, which is wattage, type of bulb, depth, etc. An example of how this would not work is 13 watts on a .75 gallon nano should equal the same thing as 1300 watts on a 75 gallon. But there are some corals that can live under the 1300 watts on the 75 gallon, but not the 13 on the .75.

I def can't agree with "only MH" Garf raises some beautiful SPS under just VHO.
you can't beat the intensity of MH and you can't beat the flourescence of VHO, they make a nice pair!

How often do you have to change your MH bulbs?

average about 1 year, alot of variables though.

I see your point, but you cannot fit enough VHO lamps onto a 29 gallon for that to work well.

I see viper...your right in his situation, but in your post you said "all corals" and I would have to disagree with that.

i think i will go MH. just so i have no worries in the long rin. you all know how it is when you see something at the aquatic store you want. you want it no matter what it takes. i wanna be prepared for that. i may do like a MH with some kind of atnic bulb for a blue tint. thanks alot for you guys help and opions.

i finally got everything set up, 175 watt MH at 12000K, two 75 watt VHO actinics over the 29 gal. All i have to say is WOW! I am a MH convert forever!
