The big variables are Temperature control and CO2 elimination. So, if you can maintain a good temperature and PH then there is no issue.
If it's a reef tank you will need to keep it clean or it will cut down on light significantly.

I hate how all the moisture builds up and leaves all the water driblets on it. is there an alternate to the glass lid?

You can get egg crate in the lighting section of Lowes or Home Depot, for example. Cut it to size and replace the glass (or some of it) with the egg crate. It passes light in, and CO2 out, and allows evaporative cooling to help keep your tank cool in warm weather. Be sure to watch the water level, though, and make up for evaporation with RODI water.

I always used a canopy, it gives the tank a nice finished look. Most folks just don't bother to cover a SW tank and just leave it open for best gas exchange. Just have the light up high enough to not get splashed...problem solved.
