I didn't know straberry crabs got that big. I've had one before but it was normal size, half inch.

That is a strawberry hermit. They can be pretty nasty little guys we have one at work in the shark tank. One day he and the bambo shark went for the same silverside when the shark took his silverside he grabbed on to his head/gills and wouldn't let go. Took the shark about a minute of swimming through and knocking him into rock to knock him off.
Wow!! That must have been something to see...LOL i am picturing the shark....He must have been freaked out!! LOL

I wouldn't go without a CUC IMO unless I had an aggressive Fish only tank. I can't clean among the corals and clams like my snails and hermits... I just vacuum up all the waste I can.

This is the aggressive forum after all :p Yes, I'd have a CUC in a reef tank, but for an aggressive tank its as much for show as anything else.

Kermit the giant hermit is still doing well, I'm happy to say.
It had a runin with my Queen Angel and with my Dogface Puffer but Kermit was able to defend himself and now the other fish leave him alone. And so far no agression at all on his part.

I was just wondering, would a crab of that size do much when it comes to CUC. How good are they at actually cleaning compared to regular hermits?

Not really sure. I see it climbing the rocks and picking at stuff. It would probably help if I didn't feed it myself.

This thing is a really good sand cleaner. It's completely cleaned up the front of my tank. Managed to get a good closeup.

Big hermits are great. I have kept them for years and despite being called not reef safe have never had one eat any of my soft corals(which is all I keep). I even keep small fish with them and they are way to slow to catch a fish. I don't even mess with the small hermits as the big ones do a way better job of moving substrate around. However I hope your rocks are stacked real good -- because they can move some heavy objects as they get bigger. Also more than any of your other fish watch your lunar and eel if you have one. The lunar will constantly pick at the hermit trying to bite chunks off and because they are so fast they can shoot in and get a chunk before the hermit can react. Main problem with eel is always stealing food from them and so they will starve if not fed every couple days a hunk of squid or shrimp as scavenging in your tank is not enough for them to survive. Enjoy him because he will truly be entertaining. My daughters favorite thing in the tank.
