44 Gallon Hex Reef

Nice hex. I'm also trying to silence the critics with my 35 gal (?) hex reef. What kind of light do you have on it? Any specifics you can give on it would be greatly appreciated!

Pj,
Dont let the critics deter you. Hex away I say! Jerry has a great looking tank as well as cichlidkid.
I have a 44 Pent. set up as a reef and it is doing well. I will post some pics later. The hex's, pent's, and other odd shaped tanks are great for small spaces. With the explosion of equipment out there, you can make just about anything work.
The biggest problem I always had with the Pentagon was that it was deep which caused lighting issues for a reef system. Then M/H pendant lighting became more affordable. Problem solved.
Sorry guys didn't mean to get on the soap box.

Anyway, nice set up Jerry keep us posted on your progress
Best wishes to all,
Copper

I agree. For lighting I have the Coralife 24 inch 130 watt PC fixture. I recently added a 18 inch 36 watt T5 fixture to supplement. If I wasn't renting the place I would hang a metal halide fixture.
I have 5 power heads. Koralia 2, 1, and nano. Maxijet 400 and a small Rio. I have a small in tank refugium that holds chaeto. For a protein skimmer I am using the Aqua C Remora.

Well my fire fish took an unannounced vacation. Left on saturday and has yet to call. Word around the reef is that the clown was not to fond of the fire fish. I guess I will have to place another ad in the local paper for a new tankmate.

Sorry to hear that did he jump? Nice tank BTW

Thanks for the look

Don't think he jumped unless my cat ate him. Very strange. After I released him in the tank he was swimming around and the clown did not bother him. Next day the clown would chase him every time he came out.
I saw my coral banded shrimp eating the head of a small fish. But that could have easily been the head of a silverside that he stole from one of my corals.
My water parameters have not changed and I have not seen the fire fish since Sunday.

Nice torch Jerry, lemme get a piece of that, lol
. I like your hexagon, you don't see too many of them, which makes them really unique.

This is because in almost every beginner saltwater book the author discourages oddly shaped tanks. I will admit that their are some things that I would like to with my hex that I just can't. One would be setting up a sump underneath the tank. Can't do that because the stand/cabinet is to small.

Thanks bmorecopper!
Well I've made some adjustments to my 30 gal hex. I purchased a 150 watt clip-on Viper MH light, just got my RO filter in so I can move away from distilled, threw on a device that fastens on the end of my PH outtake and rotates so that I get better flow (I'll probably add another), purchased all GFCI related power stuff and hope to start a small, in-tank refuge soon with some chaeto.
My favia coral seems to being doing well as is the zoa but my BT anemone has been retracted for a couple days now after looking fantastic. My nitrate levels are much to high but as I just got the RO and need to squirt out 10 or so gallons and "break it in" before I can use the water, I'm not going to be able to do a water change for another day. Hope things don't go totally south. Tank is cycled otherwise and calcium levels are good. There's probably around 10lbs of live rock, live sand, 2 emerald crabs, peppermint shrimp, damsel & pajama cardinal (both very small) in there also. That's probably it for fish unless I get a clown or goby later.
I also purchased a much needed clip on fan (fastened to a mirror near the tank and have it blowing on the surface...really helped with the heat from the MH.
Also still having only moderate success getting my Protein Skimmer tuned.
Hope it all comes together. Any advice on how I can improve my situation given my tank would be appreciated.
Started a little blog that has info about it and a live cam @ aquarium-blog.com
