44 Gallon Hex Reef

Like most reefers I began with aspirations of a fish only tank. Read the benefits of liverock and was sold. Those ideas were out the window 6 weeks after the tank had been set up.
Blast from the past....

Hey Jerry, nice looking tank and cute kitty.
I have always wanted a hex or pent, but have not sold the wife on it yet. ha ha ha ha
Just a word of caution with the pom pom xenia, it took over my tank. A friend gave me one little pice the size of a thumb. 1 year later this is what I eneded up with. I harvest all the time and still is not enough!
Good luck.

My plan is to eventually move everything from this tank to my 120. I will then devote one whole side of the 120 to Xenia. I bought 2 branches of Xenia from Mr. X 6 weeks ago and I now have 8 branches.

That's strange! I have Silver branching & Pom Pom Xenia, both aquacultured and were around an inch when I received them, now the Silver Branching is about 5 inches and the Pom Pom is around 3 inches, but I had the Silver Branching for a couple of months before I got the pom pom. I have seen Xenia grow fairly quickly, but the pic a few posts up, starting off the size of a thumb and growing to that, it's CRAZY! But, how long have they had it in the tank?

Xenias need a fairly "dirty tank" to survive. I'm not calling your tank dirty, but it has the right conditions for it. You shouldnt clean your tank so often. Xenias are nutrient feeders. You really don't have to feed them.
I got this information on this one website. I'm not sure if it will work because I never tried it.

No reason to intentionally dirty your tank for Xenia but I hear that it will help with lowering nitrates.

A dirty tank usually = nitrates & phosphate right? Kind of crazy! LOL I have read that several types of coral like the "not so pristine" water quality, but I still do tank maintenance, including cleaning the inside front glass just about everyday! LOL It sucks, but has to be done! I used to overfeed my coral & that's when the algae started to rapidly grow, but I cut down on my coral feedings and poof, most of my "bad algae" is gone. Of course I still maintain the hair algae for my lawnmower blenny & 2 tangs, my lawnmower is a fat

[hr]
! LOL

I would love to cut down on my coral feedings but I have a sun coral. After I feed the sun coral you should see my candy canes. I will try to get a pic at night when they are ready to be fed. Mouths wide open!!!

No doubt! It's tough because the rapid increase in growth when you feed them mysis, krill etc. is hard to get away from! I used to feed my coral at least daily with mysis on top of supplementing marine snow & Aqua Vitro's FUEL. Like I said though, I was having massive algae blooms, the red stuff and it wasn't pretty! Post a pic, I want to see the hungry Cane!
