OK I did the math.. 2-175w MH = .350kwh x 7 hrs = 2.45kwh per day...VHOs are .320 x 7 hrs= 2.24 , skimmer 65 watts so .065x 24 hrs= 1.56 , little giant pump .150x24 hrs= 3.6 , mag drive .035 x 24 = .84 , UV .018 x 24 = .432, and powerheads .013 x 24 = .312 , for a grand total of 11.434 kwh per day x 30 days is 343.02 and according to theappe3 it is 11 cents per kwh my tank cost a grand total of (drum roll please) $ 37.73 a month. WOW...not so bad. That was actually fun to figure out ..now I know. SO it must be the kids leaving everything on..

If you are going by the nameplate specs on your devices, you may be even better off. Usually the actual current draw of something is less than what the manufacturer rates it at. The only way to know for sure is to use an ammeter or a energy monitor like the Kill-o-Watt to track your actual usage.
Also beware that halides, fluorescents, and UV units draw extra power for ballast overhead, which is usually about 15% or so. So 350w worth of halides will pull something on the order of 400w.

You also have to look at how much you pay per KWH. I know DUH stupid
But here SCE charges you so much for the base line rate, the then next 50 KWH it is at a higher rate, the next 50 a higher rate and so on and so on..... So having a tank and a pool and the AC running will put you at the top rate pretty fast.

OK after Dave pointed this out, I re-calculated adding the 15% to those items and new total is $ 40.44 , still not bad. And Scotts, you are correct...there is a slight difference in the charges... .052950 per KWH for the 1st 1000 KWHs then it is .062950 per KWH over 1000 KWHs. there is a fuel and non-fuel rate also.,then utility tax, franchise charge, gross receipts tax increase..

Dude how do I get electricity this cheap?
I considered building my own nuclear reactor but I was worried about the deadliness.
Wait... 2015 is only 8 years away... then we'll have Mr. Fusion. 1.21 jigawatts ought to be enough to run a big tank.

About $0.09 during the off-season.
It's a LOT cheaper starting in October. I don't remember exactly how much it is in the summer.

Anyhow, money spent on this hobby is irreverent (so what if we're out of food!) and should be tax-deductible because the stress and anxiety reduction must have medical benefits!

Dont forget the customer charge :) BTW FPL's rates went down for '07

Also another fun insider fact... FPL has one of the lowest rates in the country.

I'll bet, if you figure out your bill, using KWH above; that your tanks aren't really that much of the bill. When I lived on the Ms. coast, my wife used to use our elec bill as a reason for my cutting down on tanks, then we did the math. Our clothes dryer used more elec than my fish!

I leave my a/c set @ 79 when we're not home and 75 when we are. I also have a separate a/c system in the garage(a 80 sqft section) for my frag tanks.
