Hate to ask, but did you get that 55 from Wally World by any chance because I bought that super cheap deal that comes with the hood and nice HOB and heater and in started leaking in about 6 months and I never could figure out where it was leaking although luckily only a quarter would drain out.

Smartorl: lol that's pretty funny actually! I always get a kick out of his threads.
Fishtaco: Do you mean Wally World like in national lampoon Wally World...Or is that a wesbsite lol? It's Perfecto tank which is basically TopFin/Marineland. Not super high quality or anything. The tank itself is barely 2 years old from the date of manufacture.

I got my FW 55G, and my (now) sw 29G and 10G tanks from good old Walmart.....had them for years....never had an issue, and I believe they were made by perfecto too

Yeah, I mean Wal-Mart and I did notice my All-Glass replacement tank had about twice as much silicone on the seems.

Not yet, Flower! The tank has now been sitting outback three quarters of the way full with water for over 24 hours now and no sign of any leaks yet.
The tank does have a curious discoloration in the silicone on the bottom of the tank though. One side is clear and the other side is a little milky. It kind of looks like 2 different types of silicone to me.

I pulled the heater apart. Both elements are intact and no signs of charring on them or the electronics.

And here you can see where the plastic suction cup clip melted to it. It was the bottom clip that was around the area of the heating elements. The area obviously got extremely hot. There is some flaking/chipping on the glass but I figured that was a reaction caused by the two materials touching at a high temperature.

I'm still open to theories...

The milky colored silicone has to be the area where the leak happened.
I was thinking that too. I was tossing up whether it was two types of silicone or is that where it leaked. All of the water was gone so it had to come from the bottom. The heater was still hanging on the glass and wasn't touching the bottom of the tank so I doubt that it evaporated it all. Perhaps the heater failed becoming stuck and then it layed against the glass when the clip melted...heated the glass on the back of the tank up to the point where the joint expanded letting all of the water ooz out??? But it's sealed now...so go figure...

I agree with Flower that with the weight of the rock/gravel/sand (not sure what you were using for the cichlids) would probably be needed to recreate the scenario. I bet that would cause the silicone to leak, it just takes one tiny place, especially with the extended time period when this could have happened.

Oh Man Corey, I am so sorry to read this. Just from reading your posts you sound like a very dilligent person and you always check your tanks, but how long do you think it was from the last time you checked your tank to when it become fully emptied.

Thanks guys...I don't plan to use the tank again. I just filled it up because I'm curious to know which went first if it was the tank or the heater. I think it was the tank that leaked and once the heater was out of water then it got too hot and melted the clip. We don't have any kids, but we have had turtles before and they don't do much for me in a way that makes them all that interesting to keep. A snake would probably freak the wife out.
I could re-seal it but after a major leak like that it would mean taking the whole thing apart and assembling it back to together from scratch. And that's actually a lot of work. I don't think I'll ever purchase a tank from pet-smart again. Those perfecto tanks use thin glass. This tank had 1/4" glass...and my other 55G that I plan to use as my sump has 3/8" glass and it's an All Glass brand tank. I may just disassemble it and use the glass for the baffles for my sump.
Perhaps I doomed the fish...the wife and I have been talking about getting rid of them after my other project is finished and maybe just doing a reef tank with that tank. I have a buddy who has 3 large cichlid tanks and he could have easily accommodate them. Well I guess the decision has been made for me...we definitely won't be keeping them now.
Al...I am usually always diligent in checking my tanks...I check them at least 2-3 times a day if not more. The tank was full when I went to bed at 11 the other night. But I didn't sleep well at all. I was very tired that morning and admittedly I didn't check the tanks that morning before I headed out for work. The wife called me just before 9 in the morning when she noticed. So there is a 10 hour window of when it could have happened.

So do you give up finding the cause? LOL...I only buy dog toys at Pet Smart.
1/4th glass is for a reptile tank, the 3/8th glass is for keeping fish. They may sell it for fish, but I always make sure I get the thicker glass for fish, the10g tanks I never paid attention to, I have never owned an acrylic tank.
