so i set up a 37 gallon about 4 months ago...everything went ok..we bought grunge from leroy at garf...great stuff...so my tank did not cycle like this 75 gallon...my new 75 gallon tank had a nitrite spike...
now it was going through the brown diatom stage...but now the brown seems to have changed to a green dusting on glass and rock and sand..
so is this mormal since i did not expereince this as bad maybe with the 37 gal with grunge?? what is next? i added grunge today from garf which i ordered first of the week..
so what should i look for now...???
when would it be safe to add a fish or two?
i was thinking of adding a royal gramma.??
thanks
Wade

I wouldn't add anything live until all your levels of ammonia, nitrite, and nitrates are staying at 0
What is grunge?
Brown diatoms and green on glass is normal in a new tank...just use your magfloat cleaner for the glass...
Do you have good flow?

check out garf.org
grunge is sand...live rock ruble...all kinds of good bacteria from this organization..they have had tanks setup up for upwards of twenty years..so well established tanks...
i have one power head in there and going to put another powerhead from my 37 gallon when transfer all my stuff..
a little over a week ago my chemistry was
ph 8.4
ammonia .75
nitrite 1.0
nitrate 30-40
two days ago chemistry was this:
ph 8.2
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 5
so i think i have spiked...

LOL Maybe. I would wait until levels are at 0 for a good few days though. Then begin with your cuc.
One PH may not be enough for a 75. You may want to get another cause even 2 isn't very much IMO

i put about 3 crabs and 3 snails in the new tank about 2 days ago...after i tested the water...they seem so have ate the diatom...and helped with it...
i have about a total of 40 more crabs and snail coming mid next week...so i will do a 10 gal water change and then add the cleaning crew...and when i move my stuff from 37 gal tank there is about 30 crabs and snails total in there...
definite fish:
small yellow tang
small blue hippo
contemplating:
royal gramma
kole tang
bicolor blenny
pajama cardinal
any suggestions??

Well...the Kole lists a min tank size of 90g's
If you are going to put ANY tang in your tank....just put the yellow or the blue....A lot of people will say a 75g is too small. It may be after a while, but IMO it will be for 2.
this also depends on what else you keep. with any tang in a 75g, I would not add too much
this is just my opinion based on what I have read.

Too many Tangs...choose 1
The Hippos are very nice and get along with others
The kole tangs are nice but dull colors..good algae eaters
Yellow tangs are very territorial

What else do you have...I don't have one... lol... BUT when looked up the site says min 90g....
Well I say the minimum size tank should be at least double what they say. They say a 6 foot long eel can be in a 180. I say no. Samething with sharks.
Tangs are open swimmers. IMo a longer tank is best for them. Thats why i plan on building what i am. 10 feet long. Plenty of space.
