On my smaller tanks I do regular water changes, dosing on a small tank can be a little tricky as you can throw your water reading outa whack very easy. In this tank I only had about 20g water volume total.
On my larger tanks I dose every day or twice a day......Another trick I use is to take 4g out of my 125g tank and use it for a water change in my smaller tanks and then add 4g of new SW to the 125g tank

reason i ask is because i'm thinking about setting up my qt as a frag tank. it's a 30 gal (36x17x12). so if i do a 5 gal change every week i should be ok with my levels.

i'm thinking about fitting it with a hob filter, bare bottom, either 5 or 6 bulb t5, and a modded maxijet. what do you think?

Weekly water changes will be fine. I would add a layer of LS for the simple fact that it helps buffer your pH.
