911 I need help...

I live in Ft. Myers and had a problem during the storm… and I lost a bunch of water to get my filtration started again I had to add water… I recently moved and purchased premixed water after the move. I have see salt and have used the 2.5 cups per 5 gallons as a rough estimate… but I think my salinity is off… My hand will completely float dead man style. I don’t remember this reaction and my fish are acting drunk…
Does anyone have any idea how I might be able to test the salinity I know it must be off, and I can not find my hydrometer… due to the storm nothing is open to buy one… this is defiantly a 911 situation.

Did you mix the salt and water good enough before adding it to the tank? The only thing I can think of is aiming 1 PH towards the surface and 1Towards the middle of the tank to help dissolve and mix the new water. That is if you have 2.
I don't know how to test salinity without a hydrometer.

Get a bucket of Ocean water.
Put some in a glass.
Get some of your tank water and color it with food coloring.
Make sure the ocean water and your sample of tank water are the same temp.
Spoon a little bit of your colored tank water gently into the glass of ocean water.
If your water sinks it has too much salt. If it hangs at the top it's not enough salt.
Fix the salinity of your tank slowly or you will cause even more damage.
I just made this up on the fly but I can't find any holes in the theory.

That sounds better than my idea... the only one I had was to go to like the ocean and drop something like an egg in and see how far it droped from a measured distance...

what do i do to prevent the ocean water and my water from just mixing...?

If your colored tank water and the ocean water just mixes then you're fine.
Spoon the water in slowly.
