how long do u think it takes to get to expert status?>sry not tryin to steal from the thread, but i would say 10+ YEARS
it isnt a matter of years but the experience itself. just because you read something doesnt mean its always true unless you have tried it for yourself or have seen it firsthand. alot of people, for some odd reason, read tons of information and then give advice like they've become experts over the course of 6 months. others like borneman, holmes-farley, sanjay, etc are experts because of their knowledge of certain scientific topics. they have the research power, knowledge, and experience to be considered an expert. sanjay's charts and studies of lights are probably the best there is in the hobby.
a sad thing in this hobby is that one post can cause a HUGE hype. do i consider myself an expert? not at all. i have a biology background that allows me to understand most of the processes in aquaria systems but it doesnt make me an expert. i just have the benefit to try products for the hobby and give my honest opinion on items. it sucks when stuff you know are horrible gets credit for something thats not worth it at all. take for example the 14k pheonix. people continue to hype up the pheonix as one of the best bulbs, especially for nanos. IMO it washes colors out that can be picked up by other bulbs. these were tests done over a 3 month scale side by side in the same tank so parameters were the same.
