A few questions

Hi, I've been reading a lot here. Great board. I have a few questions. I am running a 55 gal UGF with gravel as a substrate. (White gravel). This tank has been up for 13 years with no significant problems and never a crash. I know now that sand and lr are the way to go but since I have such pristine water conditions I am hesitant to changing my setup. My questions are as follows. What kind of a cleanup crew do I need?Something that doesn't need sand. I have absolutely NO ALGEA whatsoever in the tank. It is crystal clear. Why is that? I am thinking of getting plants but what kind will grow in gravel and not sand? Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

I wouldn't put any plants directly in your display tank, especially if don't have algae and haven't had any major problems in 13 years. Placing macro algae in the display tank would leave the possiblity open for the macro to go sexual and pollute your water with the nutrients it has absorbed. A safe route would be to create a refugium, where you could establish a sandbed if you wish, but also keep macro algae and design a light cycle that would discourage macro algae from going sexual. Not only would you have additional water volume in your tank, but the tank would also have extra filtration.

I would recommend you not change anything. Obviously whatever you are doing works well for your tank.

I am afraid that is too many. I don't have any live rock or any algea in the tank for them to eat. I am afraid they will starve. With no live rock or algea don't you think that package is a bit of an overkill?

you could always buy algae sheets to feed them, what are you looking to get exactly? is there something in specific you want-- shrimps, crabs etc... i'm not sure why you want a clean up crew if there is nothing to clean? or do you just want to add some inverts to your tank?

give some scarlet hermits a try, and some various snails, and mabye a cbs and a serpent star?
just a suggestion, if you dont want one of the packages they sell here, you can by them singally or in groups of 10 i think. check out the invert section here. your bound to find something you'll like

OK, just placed my first order with SWF. I bought 25 Hawian Zebrah Hermit Crabs, 20 Scarlet Hermitt Crab and 20 Nassarius snails. Think this will do the trick? Just trying to keep the bottom of my tank clean.
