UV sterilizers kill micro organisms and can effect algae, but two weeks time and it killed your fish and not the algae? There was a lot more going on in that tank. But that was 2 years ago, just make sure you do things right this time.
I personally do not think UV sterilizers belong in a main tank, especially if it's a reef. They do, however, help in a QT.
