Adding a med size blue hippo to 175

Do you guys think it would be wise to add the blue hippo first? She would be all by herself in that big tank. She is already eating at the LFS in the little holding tank. then how long should I wait before adding a sailfin tang?? i was thinking two weeks????

anyone have any suggestions. I know these guys are very ich prone. I bought a uv sterlizer mainly for this fish and the sailfin. The tank is plenty big just need to know if it would be better to be by herself or have a friend come along????

i've kept a small hippo in a 55 with no problems, just temp. acclimated. Long as your water quality is good I wouldn't be afraid to add both of em at the same time. In this way neither has the chance to establish dominance. Plus a 175 is a lot of room for them to "avoid" each other. That's just my 2 cents. I'm sure plenty will disagree

Thanks man I am just a little confused if it would be better for her by herself which imo is not natural. Or if it would be better to come with another fish such as sailfin or mabye a marine beta I was looking at seems like that would be more natural in the tank. Come on guys I know there are more that can answer this.

you could most likely do both at the same time in that size tank you should have no issues.place the hippo then the sailfin at this time you hav no bioload so you wont have a major spike by adding both in the same day.make sure you keep the kights off for the first 1hr after placing them in the tank .they will automaticly find there own space in the dark after that hr turn the lights on and feed them a good hebavore diet personanly i use emerald entrese for my tangs even veggie flakes will do as a dry food.remember to feed your tangs daily they do require2-3 feedings every day.no brine shrimp they are hebavores and require lots of greens .if you feed them the right foods right away chances of illness is greatly reduced

I put in a sailfin and a hippo 5" same day and they hide next to each other in the same hole. The sailfin will be more out going. Mine was any ways. The sailfin came out the next day and ate lunch with the other fishes. The hippo is just now coming out and eating some romaine and a tiny bit of the flakes. He took a full week to start to come out when the lights are on. From what I understand this is fairly normal. BUT I am far from any kind of expert on the fish.

I added a yellow tang and a hippo to my 90 gallon the same day. Neither one has a problem with the other. With your big tank you shouldn't have a problem and would probably be even better to add them at the same time.

Thanks guys thats what I wanted to know. I have some Vegitaion growing in the tank that came in on LR also I will get some of the emerald green stuff. I love those two Tangs and want them to be as happy as possible. Will it matter if the saifin is a little bigger??? Maybe an inch or so longer. I can't wait. Checked all parm yesterday and we are 0 accross the board with 1023 SG. This big baby is getting ready to have some life in it.

They are in a doing good the Blue will come out and eat in fact she ate emerlad Entries the first night. Shoudl I feed them a block of this 3 times a day? It blows around and they catch it as it comes by but some goes into the overflows. Also I bought some dried green seaweed and the sailfin has niped at it a bit but they have yet to finsish a 3 inch piece of it before it blows off of the clip and I have to gather it. I soaked the emerald entries in garlic stuff from kent they seem to like it. I should have pics tomorrow

Feeding your fish three times a day is going to cause water quality issues.Feed once a day,as much as they will consume in a few minutes...and the nori or dried seaweed.
Try using a mag float to hold the dried seaweed,it holds it better.I would also suggest a variety of foods...since these are bulky fish. Some formula VHP would benefit them, along with some mysis shrimp, squid, fresh shrimp.etc.

as your nic name states research firs
^.tangs are herbavores not carnivores and need a herbavore diet.hippo tangs are also highly prone to ich to reduce ich outbreaks you must feed these fish proper nutrition.all experts state these fish should be fed at least 3-4 times per day.2-3 will suffice.reason being hebavores are poop machines as all state tangs are.of course they are they need very little meaty foods once you start getting carnivores into the tank then start adding more meats the emerald entrese will give your tangs plenty of that but are more benefited by the algae base of this cube.you should be doing weekly water changes no matter what anyways so if you feed your fish properly dont worry about water changing due to feeding .but to reduce cost of feeding and wasted food .you could introduce your fish to flaked or pelleted foods for morning feedings.omega one makes 2 dfferent types of flakes that your tangs will benefit from first which I use every other moring is veggie flakes alternate mornings I use thera+A non medicated antiparesitic formula pellets by spectrum .omega one also makes a kelp flake just feed enough of any of these foods to be consumed in 3 min . you can use the seaweed sheets for daytime picking if they arent eating as much as you place in use smaller sheets is all. your tangs can also benefit from cyclopseze. btw nice looking tank
ps if you thaw the cube with the garlic extreme in a little waterin a cup then dump into tank you will get less waste

You have your opinion, and I have mine...I do research...every day.I feed all tangs and most fish a combination of algae based{including spirulina} foods and meaty preparations once a day,and sometimes even skip a day.

not trying to debate whos right whos wrong thats a never ending battle but as you stated all of your other fish including tangs.he/she only has tangs so far.at this point and time only needs to worry about a tang diet.these are new fish also so feeding is crucial after they have fully settled in and have adjusted to their new home then feeding can be reduced if she finds more waste then what is consumed.im no expert either .I only have my hippo tang because it was starving to death in the LFS due to its tankmate which was a very large hippo tang that would not let this one feed at all .this fish was skin and bones almost completely emaciated from starvation.my first experience with ich was with this fish she pulled through and now is a happy fat fish and eats like a pig lol oh yeh as for the question of size difference in your tangs no it wont make a difference they are not of the same species of tangs your hippo is a surgeon variety and other is of the sailfin variety.the troubles can come from adding fish of the like variety such as a yellow tang is also of the sailfin family.hope that helps
