hey guys, i am thinking about adding fish (like large puffer) into my tank but the cycle is not completely finish yet. Looks like the nitrite is on the way to going down (but it is still toxic). I am getting the puffer on 22nd of this month and today is 18th. I am getting this puffer at super deal and do not want to miss it. So my questions is if i do water change on 17th and add puffer will puffer survive??? My tank has live rock with protein skimmer and 125G with sump. Help me out here........

This is a gamble you have to make. Get a fish at a good price but chance loosing it and make him go through hell in the toxic water or wait till the water is prestine and allow him to be happy even if you have to pay a little more later on.

but is puffer hardy to survive this kinda thing??? FYI, it is Arothron Meleagris (different color of Golden Puffer) and is large one.

I agree with airforce. Why would you take a chance on killing a puffer or any other fish just to save a some money? Whether or not it survives doesn't matter. It should be will it be happy and healthy in your tank? Be patient and wait for another good deal to come around. Or see if someone else can hold it for you and then buy it.

sounds like a good time to start up a quarantine tank. you can get the good deal and your tank should be ready when the quanantine period is over
just my two cents

i agree with fromoe, you can use a cycled water in a QT until yours cycles. Don't risk putting the puffer in until your main tank is cycled completely, I would even wait afew weeks after the cycle completes to add the fish.

Cancel the order..you are not ready. Also, biological filters live on surfaces not in water. If this is a large puffer you will be facing the same issue in a QT tank if it does not have an adequate bilo-filter established via internal surfaces or external filter media. The QT tank will need to be of some size as well if this puffer is large.

Research of puffers on another site has informed me that you should never cycle a tank with puffers or add one to an uncycled tank. They recommend letting the tank mature for at least 6 months after the cycle has finished before adding a pufferfish. Wait for the next one, please.

Nitrite isn't toxic but your tank isn't mature enough for a Puffer IMO. What other inhabitants are you wanting in the future?
