The reason for a power head is simple. The water wave/current in the ocean is the life of the ocean, it carries away waste, it brings food to the corals and adds oxygen to the water. When people began keeping SW tanks, copying the ocean is what works best.
Creating a water current in the tank does the same thing the waves do in the ocean. Those flowing corals you see dancing have no muscles or bones, they dance with the water current. That is how they eat and catch their food. It only looks quiet and calm in a reef tank..it's actually very turbulent.
