ok i know that this is out on a limb and there is a difference BUT....every see old rusted out t bucket cars and go wow that looks nice then u see a brand new corvette and go wow that looks nice?.....ok so now to make the connection, im really thinkin bout using tap water on my fowlr so i can get some alge in there so the tank doesnt look quite so clean id kind of like a little more natural look with some bubble and hair alge? iknow im like in a huge minorty with this and i do realize that some of it isnt goin to stick around w the CC but honestly is there any set backs by wanting more alge then usual? o and also im running a fowlr tank so i dont have the corals to be quiet so picky and have any issues with that....so good idea or bad?

BAD IDEA....the problem is what are you gonna do when it takes over your tank
BUT YOU can buy some colorful stuff that will make the tank look less bland, and NOT take a risk of tank takeover
Look into some macro algaes and plants...

I personally wouldn't like the look of hair algae and bubble algae in my tanks...
You could put macro algaes in your display tank, as long as you didn't have any herbivorous fish... tangs etc.
Try out some caulerpa prolifera, caulerpa mexicana, pink galaxea, shaving brush, halimeda, mermaids wine glass, maidens hair, whatever makes you happy! If it starts taking over then add one herbivorous fish and keep adding tap water... you wouldn't have any problems with nitrate/phosphate! lol Go for it, as long as your fish are happy, well fed, and healthy.

Got a friend with lionfish, trigger, and Puffer tank that he let hair algae grow out of control. He loves it. I must admit when the algae waves in the flow and you have a lionfish swimming out of it, it does look awesome. Not my type of party though. He makes his tap water worst though to keep it feeding, he fills a 5 gallon bucket then lets half evaporate then he fills it back up again. That's his top off water. So it has lots of nutrients. Again not my taste.

algae pulls nitrate and phosphate out of the water column. IT also removes heavy metals and adds oxygen to the water. There's nothing wrong with algae. In fact, I love algae, but it gets a really bad rapport, especially in reef tanks. What's pretty to one person, is ugly to another. Find what makes you happy and go for it!

i cant have cc and fish that will help control the alge so that i can just have more then the average tank?
I too like the look of bubble algae...not hair algae. Don't use tap water...get some bubble aglae and introduce it into the tank. The red Botryocladia is bright red and looks awesome. Macro algaes are great for transdporting nitrates and phosphates out of the tank. it also adds color. Look up macro algae and select a nice type for your tank.

first things first . have your tap water tested
Just because you are allowed to drink it does not mean it is not detrimental to your aquarium

and once it gets test how much of what levels does every one think it should be at? honestly im super tired of hearing how ro di water is the only thing u can put into a tank.....seriously in the ocean there isnt ro di unit catching the acid rain is there?.....there are always things in your water and that every water becuase that is how water work and by water we can just include the ocean ok?

pfft, don't worry. I use tap water to start all my tanks. lol! Go ahead and use tap water. Macro algaes regularly take up ammonia, toxins and heavy metals out of the water column. I don't see any reason why you can't use tap water in your case.

First 5 months is a baby tank...2nd..LOL, at least your fish have good teeth with all the Flouride they are getting and don't forget...everything in tap water is put there by the Sanitation guys to kill all bacteria, that includes the good bacteria we try so hard to keep alive. Don't worry, we have all kinds of things we can tell you to do to get rid of the hair algae when it raises it's ugly head. We got your back.
Jacobsdad....
The ocean water is greater than what is dumped into it...as Joe posted..dillution
The reason we use RO water is because there is nothing in it...so the only thing in our fish tanks are what we introduce in our salt mixes and supplements. The tiny box of the ocean we have, can't compare to the real ocean, and the chemicals in tapwater is super concentrated in comparison.

basiclly all that said was that im right and ro water is just a fancy water that is super clean...things are in all water and just like are if u were to breathe straight Oxygen it would be different then breathing air....so some things in water should be there and not just pure h2o......? u should only remove the things in water that are extremely harmful to fish is what the thing said

Basically (I think that’s how it is spelled) fancy water or in your terms super cleaned water is in fact what you should introduce into your system.

Yes the thing is right

the whole concept of this entire thread is that i like hair and bubble agle and why cant i have it and everyone has one thing to say "dont let it get out of control" not one person has come to the front w a complete reason as to what is in tap water that with treatment is going to kill the fish....by using ro water u are allowing the water to be clean and the baterica comment "chemicals remove baterica that we try to create" well ro water has nothing in it so you just want a clean slate i want hair and bubble alge to be morethen just a super clean tank....salt water has its own mineralsand elements which include chloride, sodium, sulfate, magnesium, calcium, potassium, bicarbonate, bromide, borate, strontium, sillicate, fluoride, iodine, zinc, selenium, copper, tin, iron, manganese, phosphorus, cobalt, nickel, chromium, vavdium, molybdenum.....sounds like ro water is taking more then ur are putting back in?
