Alkalinity

What could be the negative effects of having your alkalinity to high? I'm not having this problem I'm just wondering.

Calcium carbonate precipitation.
This may sound like a mild side effect of high alkalinity but I have seen many tanks crash as a result. Typically from people not understanding that raising PH with a buffer is the wrong thing to do.

It would depend on how the high alk is effecting your other parameters. You could have a very low calcium level due to the high alk level. Calcium as you may already know is very important in a reef tank. The reason calcium levels need to be high is because many reef inhabitants need it to build their skeletons.

Thanks I'd read before about Calcium precipitation when adding calcium I was just wondering if Calcium carbonate would do the same when raising your ALK and if there were any other effects.
Thanks again for your quick answer.
