You are also thinking overcrowded like 20 people on an elevator..When someone on here says overcrowding they mean 20 people on that elevator may fit, but it will stink, and they all poop, some more than others..

Sorry about the losses! I'm a newby too and patience has been the single hardest and most important thing to learn. Tanks been up and running since Dec 31 and I'm just now getting ready to add my second fish (as soon as he's done QT'ing)
Good luck!

My guess is you have already thrown the dead fish out so let the tank cycle. If by chance you still have the fish I would put them in a plastic bag with my receipt and take it back to the LFS and talk to the person that sold you. Then I would explain to him what happen based on his advice then demand my money back for the fish. If he doesn't agree to that then take it to the manager. If the manager doesn't give you a refund then tell him you will chalk it up to experience and that you will tell every one you know not to do business there. And then tell him that you will get all of those people you know to tell everyone they know and so on. If he doesn't understand that well you get my drift.

Lol I still have my Regal Tang in my 12-gallon people flame about
On some sights it says the smaller Purple Tangs are fine in 28-galls lol,but you haven't cycled long enough, should've quareteend them, and the clownfish killed eachother, got overcrowded, stressed out the tang and...you get the idea? No FLAMMING ABOUT MY TANG! I'm getting a 125gall soon anyway :joy:

I bet everyone is waiting for that Tang to get ick or ich at least
So far my 2 clownfish and Blue-Hippo Tang are fine...Btw 2 months so far
I was thinking of getting rid of my finicky Tang for a Purple one 2!
But please don't mix differen't types of clownfish and keep 2 1 smaller 1 larger of the same species if you want clownfish ***)

Jason,
I agree start with a good book. Let the tank cycle while you read your new book. I just purchased The Conscientious Marine Aquarist looks to be a great book, full of information.... Over 400 Pages full. If you aren’t looking to read something that big yet, I suggest The New Marine Aquarium by Michael Palletta. This book is much smaller and covers all the basic need to know. I picked it up from a local store for under $20. It’s a jump from FW to SW but with the right research and help from this site you will enjoy your new SW tank. Best of luck and keep us posted! ***)

I wonder what the use of the hobby and small tanks being popular if you could have NO FISH!,2nd of all corals and anemones aren't very fun..They sit there all day peeping when you come in,and sea anemones will eat types of fish.So I think 8 IS alot maybe a pair of Clarkii or Ocellaris Clownfish and keep a Purple Tang for a few years if it is a MUST HAVE FISH.
And I don't believe the 5 gall per 1 inch of fish or I could barely keep a fish in a 12 gall :scared:

as im sure you've heard it over and over and over again ill skip most of it. you said you have one piece of live rock in there, how much does it weigh? your gonna want probably at least 15lbs in a 28...and thats at the lower end of the spectrum, ideal would be more like 20-25lbs. the greatly helps cycles than justa rock and sand. you can get cycle or stabilizer that helps introduce backteria to your tank, which helps decrease the cycle time. dont go back to the lfs that sold you all those fish! they shouldnt have sold you that many at one time no matter how big your tank could be. you want to do one at a time. this hobby requires mucho patience, or youll be spending mucho $$$$ your tank needs to cycle for a couple weeks so hang in there and dont give up on your tank

You've had it two months, and you have quite an attitude! If you want a board where everyone will tell you anything is OK, you are right, it is not here. If you want to learn, then please listen and participate productively even if you disagree with others.

If you want a fish that will get big, be mean, and take out other fish you should build a tank around the purple tang. This is not to be rude, just hind sight is 20/20.
Many people here have been around for years, and my not have a million post but you may want to think twice to any advice you will get and use it. Or buy a good book, and read up prior to debunking any advice. Anything I take time to type is worth it, and should be taken as sage advice. I WOULD NOT WASTE MY TIME to leave bad useless advice.
While you may not have the respect for any one here, we all for the most care about the safe keeping of our fish and enjoy the hobby.
I am willing to help you with any questions with your nano tank, anything under 30gal. Most people who have a nano keep calm mild fish, and lots of " Boring" as you say coral and other inverts. Nano tanks are hard to keep, and are often a second or third tank and a step to a new challenge in keeping fish.
I wish you the best of luck and success with your tank. :happyfish

I had my 55 that was fresh water. I put to many fish in it and over 30 days 22 fish died. I thought i could add more fish than if i had had when i had a 29g. But no it for sure killed everything. 3 fish made it and had babies, then they were all eaten. It's Sad I know..
When i swtiched it to saltwater (after the fish were all eaten)..I put in sand/crushed coral mix and about 10 lbs of live rock. I also use this stuff called "stablility" or something. You put in a couple of capfuls for a day for a week dependin on the tank size..I let all of that cycle for a week and then i put in 4 damsels. I let them stay for about 2 weeks, got a clown and a crab.. THey have made it trhought all that, i just changed from crushed coral to 100% sand, they are still there. Now theres a banded shrimp, emerald crab, orange fidler crab, abotu 9 hermits, and a giant snail.. again..still goin..
The ONLY things that died were two bagai cardinalls i put in about 2 and half months after i set it up.. there was a post in here on it.. people told me the crabs got him cause maybe they slept on the ground..
all this to say..i had fish in mine after a week and a half with that stability stuff.. 4 damsels in my 55g.
I think if you ask a million people you will get 55 million answers cause there are a few different ways to skin this cat ;)...there are basics though.. sand/live rock/time(with water additives)..then fish

Just because a fish does "well" according to our standards for a couple of months does not mean that he is doing "well" according to the standards that they are supposed to be living under.
The people on this board are not trying to "flame" you. Keep in mind that there are many, many experienced salt-water aquarists on this board that have "been there and done that." They know what works and what doesn't for certain types of fish.
Have you ever been snorkeling or scuba diving? Have you ever seen a Tang in it's natural environment? They need a LOT of room to swim. That's why most of the people on here suggest an aquarium with a length of at least
six feet so that they can have ample swimming room and not have to swim up and down in a tall tank.
No one wants to see your Tang die, but because of the small tank that it's in, the chances of it living a long, full life are slim.
Just my .02

Way overcrowded and cruel!!!!!!!!!
