all my fish die

hey guys, im new here. i have had my tank set up since christmas. its a 75 gal, with a maxijet 1200, an aquaclear 500(carbon removed), 10 pounds of live rock(planning to get more soon), and 40 pounds of base rock, and 50 pounds of sand, 15 pounds of cc. as far as inhabitants go, i have a brittle star, a hawiian feather duster, 2 scarlet hermits, and 6 turbos, and a candy shrimp, and a yellow tang.
ok, i cycled my tank, and added two damsels, and a percula clown. the damsels did well, but the clown did not do so well, he would always stay in the same spot, then he would breathe heavy, and would not eat till it eventually died. i thought that it was just a bad fish, since the damsels were doing fine, so i went out and bought two more clowns. eventually, they two showed the same problems, and died in the same manner. so i gave up on clowns, i got a yellow tang, and a firefish goby, and returned the damsels, hoping they were the cause of death. everything was fine for a few weeks, then my tang showed all kinds of discoloration, and brown and white spots. as luck would have it, i had to go on vacation about two days later. when i last saw him, he was doing well, swimming around, eating well, showing no signs of stress, same with the firefish. the lady that i had watch my tank, aparently never did. i came home to a dead tang, rotting on the bottom, a huge brown algae problem, then water was about 5 gallons low, and the firefish was now showing the same discoloration as the tang. withing a few days, he would die as well. i thought it was a disease of some sorts, and i waited 3 weeks. i went out and bought a sandsifter goby. within three days, he had died, no signs of disease or stress, he never acted right to begin with though.so, for the last try, i got another yellow tang, and he is the only fish in the tank. meanwhile, i have yet to lose an invert, and the parameters are in desired range, ph 8.2, salinity, 1.024, nitrite 0, am. 0, nitrate 10, temp 79.
why am i loseing fish and not inverts?
thank you, sorry for the long post

I am not completely sure what you have. The most common disease that comes in with apparently healthy fish is ich. I would also wonder about marine velvet based on how quickly the new fish died. Most fish diseases do not affect invertebrates making a fish disease most likely.
Fortunately, if you can maintain your tank without ANY fish for 4-6 weeks almost all virulent fish diseases will die off.
You have learned an important lesson. You should quarantine all new fish for at least three weeks. This is optional for FW but is practically mandatory for SW tanks.
Welcome to the Boards!

thanx for your reply. i guess waiting three weeks wasnt enough? if there any kind of medication that might help? the only reason i decided not to go with a QT is because of the fact that i dont want that many fish. 2 clowns, a yellow tang, a mandarian, and an angel(flame or coral beauty). but, i would like more inverts.
thanx again

We don't know what you are treating! There are only a few effective medications for all of the marine fish diseases and most of these are very toxic to invertebrates, corals, and live rock. Try to never dose anything in a display tank (except perhaps immune supplements like garlic). This is a common newbie mistake. I didn't have a QT until after my first infestation.
Three weeks is usually not long enough. We have the best knowledge about ich. This has a life cycle of 23-28 days so three weeks will not kill this off.
Good Luck!

You can press your own garlic oil.
You can buy commercially obtained products at your LFS or online. I have used Garlic Guard and Garlic Extreme. I prefer Garlic Extreme as it has a dropper and is much easier to use. Try not to get it on your skin as it does have a strong odor.

ok thank you. so its the garlic oil im after? i have some minced garlic, will that work?
also, the yellow tang is very shy, and scared it seems. hiding almost all of the day. he eats some flake food, and some of the seaweed i feed him. im assuming he grazes on the live rock when he cant see me, and is feeling brave/hungry. i got him on thrusday, is this normal?
thanx again

I have no experience with minced garlic. It would probably work but I am not sure how to get it into the tank or how to dose it. You could probably do a search and get some opinions.
Yellow tangs tend to be very skittish when they are first in a tank. They are caught in the ocean so yours is still adjusting to being in captivity. It should settle down within a few weeks. Make sure you give it a varied diet with lots of veggies. It can be difficult with yellow tangs to tell if they have ich because of their light coloration. You may need to watch it with a magnifying glass.

My question is who is testing your water? Are you doing it or your LFS? Is it a *****? If you are what type of test kit are you using?

Reason I asked is I've heard of kits that give off fault readings. Where do you get your water?

i dechlorinate my water for several days before i add read sea salt mix, which has no phosphates, no nitrates. i dont think its water quality though if my inverts are thriving...

For me to sit here and tell you tap water is killing your fish would be false. But in the future you may want to think about switching to RO water for the future of your tank. On the other hand tap water is differant in all areas and it COULD be a clue to what's going on with your tank. DOes your LF selll RO water?

no, sadly, where i live, any resources are limited. i was thinking about getting one this summer though. just a small one that would produce like 5 gallons a day or so. but i know several people in my area who use the same tap water as i am, with much sucess. thanx for your help jkvjl

why dont you consider distilled water until you decide (or not) to get an RO unit? thats what i have been using for my top offs. i do not use any declor or any other chemicals at all.
i bought kent garlic xtreme, it comes in a bottle. do a garlic search here, i have heard of lots of people that use fresh garlic. i dont know if there is any reason why you couldnt buy minced garlic in a jar and use the juice from it to soak your food before you feed:notsure:
just a couple suggestions, i hope it works out for ya
