Alternate to filters hanging on the back??

Hello all,
I have started my 45 gal SW tank back up after taking it down due to lack of a job. Anyway I am just looking for an alternative to having the skimmer and bio filter hanging off the back. I had this tank as a reef running fairly well for ~1.5 yrs with the hanging filters. Better water quality is also desired.
Can someone educate me on what else I can use, looking for some kind of under the tank sump or whatever it is called :)
Need help on exactly what I need to purchase to keep the water very clean and get these existing filters off the back of the tank.
I have looked at LifeReef.com but cannot afford $400 for this setup. Is there anyone one there with a DIY?
Thanks in advance!

XSFSPD, we are almost neighbors :) . I would look at getting a 20g or so tank and using it as a sump. You will need a hang-on overflow unless you can get your tank drilled. Also a return pump and some plexi glass for baffles.

If you had a reef with live rock and at least 1/2" of live sand then you don't really need any other bio-filtration.
Skimmers are expensive so to replace your hang-on might not be an option and a sump would be a good way to get it below the tank.
If you're starting over, now would be a really good time to just replace your tank with a reef ready (pre-drilled and internal overflows).

Okay well that is a good start. Any idea on setup and actually doing the work. You mention a hang on overflow, is this something I buy or can make? Sorry this is just new to me. Any pictures would be great as well :)
I have seen larger tanks that have the black plastic pieces on the inside rear corners ... is this some kind of overflow and return? Maybe I could rig up something like that ...
I guess what I am asking is how to build this thing, exactly how does it work, what does it do .. blah blah blah ...
Thanks for the help!

That is what Guy is referring to... a reef ready (pre-drilled and internal overflows)

Defiantly the best way to go.
A hang-on overflow would most likely have to be purchased.

hmmm..... unfortunatly a new tank is not an option at this time. I guess I will take it up with the LFS and see what they suggest.
THanks guys!
