Ammonia and Nitrate PPM question

I know ammonia and nitrates should be undetectable. What is the worst PPM or borderline PPM before fish are in serious danger? It would depend on the fish but what's your estimate?

the answer to that depends on PH and temp, ammonia gets more lethal at higher temps as well as higher ph but say a PH of 8.0 and a temp of 78 degrees fahrenheit, 1.2 reading of ammonia leaves you with .06ppm toxic ammonia (un ionized) very dangerous. if your ph is 8.4 you end up from 1.2 ammonia with .15ppm toxic ammonia. Leathal to just about everything. You never want to see more than .06 ammonia in a marine tank to stay on the safe side.

IMO Fish are in slight danger with Ammonia above 0.5ppm. It is vary bad to get above 1.0ppm.
For Nitrate 80ppm will be uncomfortable for fish. The danger area is very high though.

Actually ammonia and nitrite should be undetectable. Having slight reading of nitrate is ok. Just like bang guy said if its above 80ppm then there could be a problem.

Good post, all true! PH makes a huge difference.

No. You said "i know ammonia and niTRATE should be undetectable." NiTRATE doesnt have to be undetectable, although it is desirable to have it at 0. What i stated was "ammonia and NiTRITE should always be undetectable." Having slight readings of niTRATE is not dangerous. I know your new to this forum, but try reading things thoroughly before making accusations.

nitrate is toxic around 200ppm
