***** and Sea Horses !

My ***** is getting ready to start selling Sea Horses ! I can't believe it and am really excited. I actually have a pretty decent ***** and the fish lady does a good job. I've been reading alot about the Sea Horses while waiting for them to come into a different LFS including the large thread Beth has written. My question I guess is for any opinions. I have a 20 gal. hexagon (The kind you get from Petsmart for about $60) that has been set up for about 6 months while doing my research. It is stocked with 2 inches LS maybe 5 lbs LR, two fire shrimp and two Pipe Fish. Oh and what I'm assuming to be dead corals.(Look like wooden trees.) ***** showed me the paper that said they are to be Brazilian, tank raised, and eating frozen mysid. I'd like to add some plants, maybe a little Maiden Hair because I think it is pretty. Anyone out there see any problems with my set up? Oh and BTW will I be sure to know the male from the female. Is his pouch really noticable? Thanks.

the belly on the males is less pronounced than the belly's on females. the females look like a pregnant women almost all the time and at the bottom of their belly it just juts inward where a male it goes inward more smoothly.

Totally cannot buy one myself. I already feel bad when a fish dies but for some reason a sea horse would fell like murder.
We have a place out here in California (Concord) that sells them for $80 farm raised as well.

Your set up sounds fine...problem I see is your pipefish are probably wild caught and that could be detrimental to "domesticated" seahorses. They will carry pathogens the seahorses have never been exposed to. It could kill them. It has been done, but there is a risk involved.
I could give a ton more information....but it is easier for me (since I am feeling lazy today) to direct you to seahorse.org for information. Just make sure you see the ***** feed them and they eat the FROZEN mysis before you buy them.
What filtration do you have and does your tank have any live rock? The filtration will determine if your tank can handle the bioload with the addition of any seahorses. Regardless, I wouldn't add more than two if you are keeping the pipefish.

***** + any SWF = death.
Good luck. If possible, buy the seahorse before they put them in their tanks.

You can do two brazillians in a 20 gallon. Check the flat portion of the abdomen(belly) to differenciate between the males and females. Also, they like long leaf macro algae that they can wrap their tales around. Buy a plastic plant until you establish some macro in your tank. Lots of liverock and no other fish unless they are slow bottom dwellers. Follow these rules for the first few months.

ok, this isn't a *****-bashing thread, so let's leave those remarks at the door, please.

Your setup sounds good, but darth definately has a point with the pipefish. If you decide to go with seahorses, make sure you keep a really close eye on them.
And yes, make sure ***** feeds them, and that you see them eat. My ***** recently had seahorses, and i watched them eat frozen mysis... they are pigs!!! They looked very healthy too.
At seahorse.org, there's a "care sheet" on the right-hand side of the page that gives you a lot of info. Tells you what to look for in a seahorse when you purchase them, what kind of medicines you should have on hand, suitable corals for a seahorse tank, and more! Good luck!!!

Yes, they do! I have never bought any thing live from them and I don't intend to just because my local ***** knows nothing! However, I have been to a ***** in Florida that was run VERY NICELY! So, I think it depends on the individual store and the people working there. After all, not many experienced hobbyists will want to work for 7 bucks an hour if ya'll catch my drift.
