YEAH....lots of people have different lighting on their cubes......you just need one that will either hang on top.....or has feet...
 
You would probably just eliminate the cover all together

I was going to go stock and keep a couple of softies but within a month, I added halides, modified the filtration, then filled it to capacity and upgraded to a larger tank (stupid $1 per gallon sale) which defeated the whole purpose of wanting to try a nano! It's a sickness I tell ya!

You don;t have to get one of those kits.....what size is your tank? You can buy a 24" T5HO for $239

=29 gallons I dont have the money were kind of struggling right now my tanks at my moms so no water changes till dad moves into a house his apartment lets just say fish tanks + water = big no no

I changed the lights in my nano, and put in LEDs. Everything is doing great.
