File Clams require fairly dirty water...ie. full of nutrients.
You can dose phytoplankton to extend its life but IMO you really don't want to put enough food in your tank to keep it alive. I would enjoy it while it's there and just let it starve. But that's just me ;)
They have a collection of ganglia but nothing you could call a brain. I don't think suffering can be attributed to anything without a brain.

Thanks for your answer, it has been in the tank for two years. I just bought the whole set up a week ago, so I am finding lots of neat surprises like this. Wondering how long it takes them to starve......Thanks again Bang

Just playing devils advocate here, but an earthworm has a very similar ganglian chain, which constitutes a nervous system, but as with the file clam, no neuronal mass that could be consiered a brain.
If you agree up to this point, then keep reading . . .
Take that earthworm and go fishing. See how it squirms as you pierce its flesh on the hook? Would you consider that suffering?
Again, from a neuroscientist point of view, playing devils advocate.
