Can't do...my CPR overflow box is already as low as it will go. It has screws to lift it higher but it will not go any lower, it's resting right on the rim of the tank now. As long as I make sure the lifter pump is functioning after a shut off I'm fine. It's reliable as long as it restarts as it should. Someday down the line I will switch it to a U tube type. I really want to get some fish for the 90g and some new coral. The only thing I has been getting of late are CUC critters and equipment. I want some new purdy stuff.
I know what you mean. I wished I had made a pvc overflow after paying $80 for my two box thingie.
if the display water level is 1/2" to 1" below the tank top then you should be able to lower the sump level enough ot prevent floods.
In the mean time you could also add a pvc overflow which is adjusted at a higher tank level as kinda an emergency overflow to prevent floods should the main drain fail.

There is no absolutely fail proof overflow system. If nothing else things like snails can get lodged in the drain or even algae sometimes, which block the drain.
therefore it is extremely important to adjust levels to prevent floods on any system.

You are correct in the fact that nothing is 100% perfect or fail safe, but the BeanAnimal system is the most safety minded built overflow system used. Your comment on sails/algae blocking the drain, but the nice thing about the BeanAnimal system I I the primary siphon pipe blocks, the open standpipe automatically kicks in still leaving you with the emergency standpipe to pick up excess if needed.
What other systems/designs can carry your flow requirement if your primary blocks? Your standard U tube design will either over flow or shut down. Your regular drilled tank will also overflow. Again a key point mention was proper water height levels.

Or you could simply have 2 or 3 pvc overflows. that way any one will not prevent proper draining.
And always adjust level to take into account failures.
