I would say you're ready when you have undetectable phosphates and nitrates from a test-kit like API. high phosphates and high nitrates tend to discolor sps. on other test kits like salifert, I'm sure you will get a reading, but your aim is for undetectable on something like API. Also get your skimmer broken in before you go sps.
