Gov-ernment reports?
OK, they must be tru then...
I.e.
Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
Color Televison? Is there such a thing anymore as a black and white television? What century does this report come from?
* Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.
VCR? Really?
And btw, the current statistic, according to those in the business, is that 80% have cable or satellite...
Eighty-nine percent own microwave ovens, more than half have a stereo, and more than a third have an automatic dishwasher.
ooooo - can I get me a stereo thingy? What about a quadrophenia?
What's a automatic dishwasher?
What %age of peoples has access to the internets?

The following are facts about persons defined as "poor" by the Census Bureau, taken from various gov-ernment reports:
* Forty-three percent of all poor households actu-ally own their own homes. The average home owned by persons classified as poor by the Census Bureau is a three-bedroom house with one-and-a-half baths, a garage, and a porch or patio.
* Eighty percent of poor households have air conditioning. By contrast, in 1970, only 36 percent of the entire U.S. population enjoyed air conditioning.
* Only 6 percent of poor households are over-crowded. More than two-thirds have more than two rooms per person.
* The average poor American has more living space than the average individual living in

[hr]
, London, Vienna, Athens, and other cities throughout Europe. (These comparisons are to the average citizens in foreign countries, not to those classified as poor.)
* Nearly three-quarters of poor households own a car; 31 percent own two or more cars.
* Ninety-seven percent of poor households have a color television; over half own two or more color televisions.
* Seventy-eight percent have a VCR or DVD player; 62 percent have cable or satellite TV reception.

Reefraff, you do fine without having to pull out the Heritage Foundation, if you use them as an example, you might as well be using Gore's climate change data to debate with. LOL

Those are US Census terms, ask them.
When I was a kid the majority of my friends had color TV's, we were poor, used black and white for us and when it broke it didn't get fixed for a while. We didn't go to Wal Mart for our clothes, it was goodwill. Lets just say I know poor up close and personal and what is considered poor in this day and age is a friggin joke.

I've seen this stuff posted other places, the Government also keeps a statistic for the percentage of people living in poverty who own a cell phone
.

My experience with the poor as an Emergency physician:
Mom or dad brings junior into the ED for a cold. They have a fever, and viral infection. They ask for a prescription for tylenol "so the card will pay for it". They have 3 packs of cigarrettes on them and a cell phone.
How about taking care of your kid first, then you?
Yes, being "poor" is a bit of a joke.

And before we get the typical bleeding heart response yes, there are people who have the right priorities and don't take advantage of the system who are truly poort. My issue is the poverty explosion used to justify all kinds of new government programs is a fraud.

I will ask again. To those of you whining about it.
Someone explain to me why it is bad if the index margin between the rich and the poor/middle keeps growing. How does this lessen the quality of life for the poor/middle class? Why is it bad?

Now that we're talking the issues and not why Obama is being bashed I do have some thoughts.
back in 1960 or before we had a poverty rate of about 18% or so. After the great society, new deal, fair deal and so on we still have a poverty rate of 18%.
So we again elect a president promising to tax the rich and coporations, expand the middle class, help the poor, cure poverty and so on. All things that have been promised by many presidents before. And the usual fighting special interests.
So after a little while nothing has changed.
Just as happend many times before.
And guess what?. The poverty level will still be 18%. Why? By definition. There will always be 18% of the people making less then the rest.
So Just for the sake of argument consider this method. We take all the income and sort it from top to bottom. Draw a line in the center and that income above that line is taken and given to everyone below that line. So that everyone makes exactly the same amount.
Now compare that process to all the "help the poor" arguments.
There is no poverty because noone is below that 18% line.
The middle class has expanded to 100% of the population.
To me it seems this agrees with everything Obama and the dems have promised and is attempting to implement.
To me that is what the Dems and Obama promised and are implementing.
Hopefully the pendulum will swing back. But in the meantime we will face hard times at the hands of people who think only the federal government can solve problems.
Even unsolvable problems like poverty.

I think one of the most repeated, and most accurate statements I ever heard was you can't lift those at the bottom by tearing down those at the top.

This is the beauty of the liberal stance on the poor. There will ALLWAYS be someone poorer than the average population.....That is the way the world works...even in communistic and socialistic systems...This is still the case...why? Because there will always be someone better than you, faster than your, smarter than you.....and the Government........
I still want someone to explain to me why it is bad if the rich get richer..............

I have to say that my jaw dropped a bit when i came back to the site a couple days after starting this thread and seeing that it had already reached 70 posts.
As far as Obama being a larger moron than Bush, i have to disagree, atleast our current President can form sentences. Speech was way over Bush's head. Not to mention Obama's educational and professional background compared to Bush.

Bush road along on his family name. Everything was handed to him
Bush ran the oil company that was handed to him into the ground. Obama was a succesfull Lawyer and University of Chicago Law Professor. Not to mention community activist.
Obama got to where he is today without a family legacy, all he had was his smarts.
Your the one in lala land buddy.

Ok, let's see...the oil company he was running he sold. It was in the red, but due to THE FACT oil dropped from 25 dollars a barrel to 9 dollars a barrel....do the math on that.It wasn't anything he did. He sold the company and walked away with..600,000 dollars in stock and a 120,000 dollar yearly contract.
While he owned the Rangers, they saw a profit as well.
You aren't living in lala land, you are a moron, and can only repeat the one liners fed to you by the leftist loons on tv and the radio.
If he was a successful lawyer (obama) name one case he oversaw and handled that proves this....obviously he was successful as a lawyer so this should not be to hard for you to show......20 bucks says you use a search engine. My 6 year old can be a community activist (all you have to do is participate in community activities and fund raising...whoopteefriggindoo). A guy who once made bombs and committed felonies became a proffessor as well....big deal.....
Editted to ask, How many cases do you have to win before you can call yourself a successful lawyer.....
