Well Look at you, Sir lancelot. :^^&:  hehe
I really never knew that. Neat.
:hi:
Don't even get me started! I belong to a group that does medieval recreation of 5th century Irish Celtic life, which includes culture, food, drink, fighting and crafts. The leather craft fits into that, as well as brewing beer, wine and especially mead, which is made with fermented honey.

Its definitely a fun hobby if you're into History at all. There are groups like mine all over the world as well as a group called the SCA that is worldwide. I'm not sure where in PA you are from, but the largest event in the world for people that are into this type of thing just happened over the last 2 weeks in a little town called Slippery Rock, PA, just outside of Pittsburgh. Its called Pennsic. This was the 41st year that its been going on. I went last year to the 40th anniversary and there were about 15,000 people there. You want to see some cool stuff, do a google image search on "pennsic war'

Wow, I never knew anyone who actually did that, even from cyber space. I was always fascinated with the enactments, like stepping back in time...so cool. I also saw clips on the news a few years back. Do you have anymore pictures?

That is super interesting! Thank you so so much for sharing, it was really interesting to read/research.
Slippery Rock PA is about a 6 hour drive away, unfortunately.
A historic re-enactment, but about the Civil War, takes place in Gettysburg, PA, about 2 hours away. I've never been to the re-enactment but would really like to sometime.
Oh Gettysburg... I've been there so many times!
Pictures of what I promised are going to come in a couple of days.

People think that guys that do what I do are strange, but the guys that do the Civil War reenactments are weird even by our standards! The place in Slippery Rock that hosts the medieval event also does a HUGE Civil War reenactment as well.

Maybe because they REALLY get into the act. The attention to detail even how to speak right is all important to the feel of actually being back in time. I never considered it weird or stange....maybe because I really am weird and strange...LOL

Most of the guys that do civil war reenactment have a specific person that they portray who actually lived in that time frame because we have written record of many of those people. If they are reenacting a battle in which that person died, they will allow themselves to be 'killed' on the field and just lay there, sometimes in the heatrainsnowmud for hours while the battle goes on around them. Also because of the records we have and surviving artifacts they tend to be VERY strict about what equipment they will use, even down to whether the button on their jacket is historically accurate or the type of sheep the wool of their uniform came from.
My group is a bit more lax then that since there is pretty much no written record from our time period. In 5th century Ireland, for the most part the only people that could write were catholic priests and nobility. We still strive for accuracy with clothing, cooking (very important in my group), laws and societal culture and other things. For example, we do 3 major camping events every year and during those events we do a large feast. It is against the rules of our group to eat anything at our feast that they would not have had access to in 5th century Ireland. That means no corn, potatoes, squash, tomatoes etc, beacuse those are all new world foods. We make all of our own beer and mead (honey wine) as those were very prominent back then, but do not generally have grape wine since they didnt grow grapes there and only the church had it.
