Are there certain types of silicone that I must use when doing a DIY project, or can I just get any silicone from HD??

That's not entirely true...you don't need "aquarium" silicone, just 100% silicone without the anti-mold and bacteria additives. GE Type 1 100% clear silicone works great. The labe will tell you if there are additives in the silicone. And you get A LOT more for the same amount of money.

Exactly. It need not be "aquarium Grade" by any means, just look for GE or any Type I , 100% silicone and it will be just fine and you will save some decent change as well since it costs about 50% of what they sell the same exact silicone for thats marked Aquarium Use for.
