Hey all,
I was just wondering if any of you have homeschooled your kids, or were a homeschooled kid yourself for that matter. My wife and are about to begin homeschooling our 4 yr old daughter, and I was just wondering if anyone on here had any experiences to share.

Yeah, I would've hated to be home schooled. Socialization, learning to work in groups, field trips, etc... I would've really missed all that. To each his own, I suppose. GL with it.

Not really looking for a debate on the subject, but thanks. I'm really just looking for comments from people who have experience with it.

hmmm....children next door home schooled..... :notsure:
Just make sure to stick to schedules and socialize your child as much as possible. All I know is that the kids next door will never survive when they decide to "main stream" the kids. They have no idea about accountibility, socialization, and just plain normalicy!
We knew a family several years ago that started their day just as a main stream school world and ended the same. Lunch, recess, library, gym etc was all incorporated into the days. They kids were great. Our neighbors and their group on the other hand.....

Yeah my couisins are homeschooled.... and boy are they odd. One is almost 13 and he still plays with toys and dresses up like an army man. uhhh thats not normal.
IMO dont do that to your kids... chances are if you do it all the way through high school they will go into college and things could get out of hand. They could be easily influenced due to lack of decision making skills associated with peers. Or they could just flat out fail because of the lack of parent support and motivation.
I say just send them to public school. What are you afraid of? thats why you pay property taxes.

The guy said he didn't want a debate...it's not like we're talking about putting a shark in a 55 - these are his children and these are the decisions he's made for them.
I'm friendly with a great number of people that were homeschooled when they were younger - they have, for the most part, turned out to be very well adjusted and intelligent individuals. Those who did not are the way that they are for reasons completely unrelated to the nature of their elementary school education.
Schneidts - I don't know much about your location, but where I grew up, the colleges were always really great about enrolling homeschooled teenagers in different classes - and in addition to helping them meet state standards for high school curricula, they even gave them credits that they could take with them to college. When your daughter gets older, if you choose to home school her through high school, I suggest looking into this. My friends got to take a lot of courses I would have LOVED to have been offered in high school! :joy:

Depending on where you live it could be OK.... In example, here in Central Ohio our YMCA has classes for kids that are homeschooled and that need "socialization" time along with gym hours (required here). Even groups such as Mommy and Me have things like that. I think it is a blessing that you are able to do that in your household, but make sure that you have looked at all possible outlets (as I am sure you have) for both the sanity of your little girl's and your wifes!!! It is a big challenge, but get involved with other families in your community that are doiing it as well!! Good luck!!!

Takia, thanks for the well wishes and tips. We live in upstate NY, and there are an astonishing number of activities, groups, and resources available to homeschool families. Our local YMCA does have group excercise activities for young children, like yours does. Some other good activities for children here include little ones' gymnastics, where kids her age can play and learn gymnastics in groups for a couple hours every week. Kindermusic, where kids of the same age group learn to play instruments and have musical free time. Daisy Scouts for ages 5 and up. There is reading and play at the local library, where kids have a story or puppet show and have some group play as well. A homeschool network here has about 50 families that meet weekly and have different activities for different age groups as well as various field trips. There is a co-operative extension here that has a 4H type program for little kids, and a couple orginizations have weekly group craft activities for children her age. There's alot more depending on what you're looking for, those just suit us pretty well.
You're right that it is a blessing to be able to educate our children at home. My wife has years of teaching experience and was an elementary ed. major in college. I also have teaching experience and took some early ed courses in school (though not nearly as comprehensively as she). In an earlier post I wrote that I didn't want a debate, and mainly it's because I don't want to argue in favor of it. I think it's absolutely wrong for lots of families out there. I also agree with Mimzy in that many people that were homeschooled and have social problems are most likely so because of other reasons. As someone earlier wrote, "to each his own".

We debated on it when my children were younger but decided against. I think it's great if you do it the right way. Socializing is important, as you already know. There are alot of support groups for homeschooling and I'm sure there are parents around you homeschool. I would try to get together and make your own field trips up and what not. Good luck. It sounds like you have it all figured out already.

I was not offering up a debate. I am just offering some insight/observations that I have experienced in my area for many years. There are loads of resources/groups in most areas for you to take advantage of. I am just giving you what I have seen on both sides of the spectrum.
The families that don't offer structure with their home schooling shows in the children. The families that have structured days/weeks/months/summer etc., shows in a positive way. I have seem some families that just don't want the rules and accountability that is need in a traditional school.
I am sure you are going to be able to provide what is the best for your children.
