So now what?

I havent watched tv on any sort of regular basis in four maybe five years. I got sick of it a while ago. and realised how fast two hours of tv a night adds up to many hours of people selling me instant stain removers that dont work, the newest tampon that being a male I have no need for, and the WONDER PRODUCT THAT WONT BE SOLD I STORES, only to be found in stores a couple months later marked "as seen on tv". I dont even have rabbit ears hooked up.
robert ludlum- the matarese circle, the bourne identity well pretty much any ludlum book is well written and has a good story to it.
some tom clancy, some of his books are just too dry to get into. avoid "the bear and the dragon".
anything fish or coral related even if its way out of date, like right now I am perusing the handbok of tropical aquarium fishes by dr. herbert R Axelrod and Dr Leonard P Schultz (the revised 1990 edition)
clive cussler is kind of a fun read but dont read to many of his books in a row or the recurring situations will wear you out on his books.
that said, I read a lot of other things like the I ching, books on cosmogenisis and theology. it totally depends on my mood.

OK, I went to the library and picked up a book
written by one of my favorite childhood authors-Steven King. It is called Cell and though I have only just started it, I almost feel as though a weight has been lifted from my shoulders, as though I have settled into a comfort zone. Curled on the sofa in front of the tank reading has actually relaxed me. In fact I fell asleep after not more than a dozen pages.
What are your favorite authors and what kind of fiction? How much do you read? I am talking fiction, going off into the land of make-believe. It almost seems there is no time in today's fast paced society to read, but I wonder just how true that is?
I had one of those lately. It stated to tell me things I didn't want to know, but I couldn't find the CTRL-ALT-DEL buttons, so I burned the book....

Umm, that would be Douglas Adams, not Charles, and it's "Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy"
Further proof that there should be a mandatory "jet lag" test before you can use a computer. It is Douglas Adams, and I was probably thinking of "Restaurant at the end of the universe", another great Adams book. I won't be flying long distance for a while now, so I should be (marginally) more coherent.

YEah that book read like a first novel that he tried to have published they turned it down, but once he was established they released it because his name would sell it.

I just donated almost 400 books to salvation army. they were ALL forgotten realms and dragon lance books. too bad you didn't get into books before...
I LOVE robert jordan's wheel of time (he died before he could finish the 12 book series, but someone is writing it). it's been going on since 95 i think. i'm going to be re-reading the Shanara books. I'm currently reading Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series-es.

One of my favorite authors is ---- Francis (reading him since I was younger).
I like crime/suspense novels, and animal type fiction as well. (just read James Herriot...though it's not fiction).
I also just read a James Siegel novel, Detour, and it was pretty good too.
I try to read when I'm on vacation, and during the summer. Always relaxing to pick up a good novel and just spend time with it without interruptions.

I am a huge romantic horror, horror, fantasy, etc lover.
Stephen King....my favorite is Dragon's Eyes and all his books when he wrote as Richard Bachman. The Long Walk is a trip.
Maggie Furey...The Aurian series is wonderful.
Lightning by Dean Koontz.
The Clan of the Cave Bear series. I have read them all and I hope that Jean Auel writes some more.
Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series. It's about a telepathic waitress who gets involved with vampires. They are making it into a miniseries on HBO called True Blood. Great read. Funny and Sexy.
I like Kresley Cole. Writes some great romantic horror. Vampires and werewolves and elves, oh my!....lol
Oh and we must not forget Undead and Unwed series about the new vampire queen. That series is incredibly funny. I laughed all the way through the first one and all the others for that matter.
Anyway, yep I love to read. My mother used to take my books away so I would go outside and play.

TV free for nearly 4 years, now. We buy movies and use the playstation occasionally, but for the most part our TV collects dust.
I agree with RKZ on Robert Ludlum. Good stuff. I read some Stephen Donaldson when I was in high school. The Chronicals of Thomas Covenant. From what I remember, that was a good series. (both of them) Now I spend my time reading the Bible and commentaries along with Biblical history and recently some Hebrew and Greek translation. Wife is reading a lot of C.S. Lewis lately. (not just the Narnia books) Seems like I once read that he and JRR Tolkien were friends.

Yeah they were; funny thing is JRR Tolkien was a christian when he wrote the Lord of the Rings series, and C.S. Lewis was an athiest when he wrote the Narnia series. Isn't that a kick in the pants?!

I'm not sure where you heard this, but it's not true. Lewis returned to Christianity in 1931. The Chronicles of Narnia were written between 1949 and 1954.
"Although raised in a church going family in the Church of Ireland, Lewis became an atheist at the age of 13, and remained as such until he was 31 years old."
"Lewis converted to Christianity in 1931. Lewis's 1931 conversion followed a long discussion and late-night walk with his close friends Tolkien and Hugo Dyson; after it Lewis converted to Christianity, while on his way to the Zoo with his brother, and joined the Church of England"
"Written between 1949 and 1954 and illustrated by Pauline Baynes, the series is Lewis' most popular work having sold over 100 million copies in 41 languages."

Almsot fiished with Cell by King. I think it must be at least 5 years or so since I have finished a novel. Now what to go to next. There have been so many interesting posts and recommendations here.
I wonder if there are still book clubs around where you sellect each month or so and paperbacks are sent to you like the DVD clubs? I will have to look into it.

right now i am reading a biography on the beatles.
its called The Beatles by Bob Spitz. i have read it once before about a year and a half ago, and it is really good. It is told more like a story than a bio.
I dont know why but i always read good books multiple times, even if they are in succession. also, when i go to borders or barnes and noble or where ever, i walk around for like an hour, and never find anything that i want to read. so indecisive.

Thanks to all with the suggestions on good reading. Just finished Silence of the Lambs and starting Hannibal. This is the first book that I have read that was also a motion picture and played out almost to the tee as written. Most vary so greatly from the book that you wonder if they are one in the same.
Still have only had the TV on for a short segment of the news and a movie every now and then and have not missed it in the least.

I read at least one full book a week and also listen to audio books when I am driving to work (45 minutes each way).
You should read some of Clive Cussler's
books. His hero is a marine biologist crossed with a oo7-type of wonder man. All the books involve the sea and they all have several stories within a story. I think his earliest book was Raise the Titanic (about salvaging the Titanic). The books are full of action and easy to read. Some of Cussler's books that come to mind are: Valhalla Rising, Inca Gold, Atlantis Found, Sahara, and Shock Wave. Oh yeah, he likes old expensive cars too.
You have angler fish, at least one bird, and have had venemous snakes in the past. Hhmm, you should enjoy some books with animals in them. James Herriot's books as a vet in England are easy reads and fun. Start with All Creatures Great and Small. I. Dinnesen's Out of Africa is another good book.
Dan Brown's DaVinci Code
and Angels & Demons
are fast paced thrillers and great fun.
David Balducci and the earlier Tom Clancy books are page turners too.
Dune
by Frank Herbert is classic science fiction and very good. Isaac Asimov wrote some great science fiction too.
I love the Janet Evanovich novels about a lady bounty hunter. The titles all have numbers in them. The first is called One for the Money
. They are offbeat and very funny. I picked up book #6 on my way to Tahiti and kept laughing out loud on the plane ride over. When I returned to the states I immediately got books #1 - #5 and now I buy them in hardback as soon as they are published. I think the latest was #16. Some people may tell you they are chick books but my husband loves them too.
I also loved The Historian
by Elizabeth Kostuva which came out a few years ago. It is very different and involves a young woman who ends up looking for Dracula. I know it sounds stupid but it is a very compelling read. Everyone I have lent the book to raves about it.
James Michener writes long detailed books. My favorite was Space
.
Are you interested in non-fiction? Endurance- Shackleton's Incredible Voyage
is very compelling and has some really cool pictures. And of course you'd like the revised and updated second edition of Robert Fenner's The Conscientious Marine Aquarist
that was just released.
You can find these books at the library or used book stores. You can't beat the entertainment value of a book for the cost. And by the way, I listen to audio books when taking care of my aquariums or just watching the fish and corals.

For me I like books by Willam Johnstone especially his Ashes series. Then followed by Clancy and then Star Wars and Mechwarrior books. Soory I played Mechwarrior both as as the borad game then on the PC. In Mechwarrior 4 Mercenaries I had a Fafniar mech that would just about go thru anything made. Of course packing 2 Heavy Guass Rifles and 2 Heavy Er pulse Lasers called I would rip you open so fast you were dead before you got near me.
