Anyone know how to ship a dog?

My mom has decided that she does not want her ultra-cute dachshund anymore. We of course agreed to take it, but she is in Phoenix and we are near LA. Does anyone know the easiest and/or cheapest way to ship a dog?

i would say put the dog on a plane in a crate..just like you would be going if you took your dog on vacation with you on the plane. and pickup at the airport like normally when you take pets with you

05, I guess I should have said that I already knew that. I was more looking for info like what airlines ship dogs, any info on prices...... The flight is only an hour so I am not worried about the flight time. The main airline we use out here is Southwest and they do not take animals.

It will need to be up on its shots . Call around and see which airline is cheepest . They will walk you through it . Fairly simple .

Most airlines will ship dogs and all you should need is a current rabies vaccination and a 'health certificate' from a veterinarian. All the airlines have separate 'rules' and fares so you will have to check. I know American ships and probably services that route.

I was a veterinary technician for three years and have heard horror stories of animals on airplanes...just ask lots of questions and I'm sure she (or he?) will be fine. I know American Airlines takes dogs. I was going to use it to take my doberman puppy when I moved here from Chicago in December, but his ticket would have cost more than mine! ($950). So we drove.

Scotts....what the heck are you thinking brother? With all of those cats already. Is it you, or the wife? Who is it that just can't say NO when it comes to orphan pets?

Al, Kiki, Thanks. I have looked it up and all things considered it would be about $250 to ship the little guy out here. I might as well fly out there with one of my kids, rent a car and drive back for about the same money. That way at least I would get something out of it.
T3, the kittens are gone. They are at the pound where their new families can adopt them.
This little guy is an awesome, friendly, energetic little dude. Honestly he is too much for my mom so it is the best of both worlds.

Okay, I have to admit that is hilarious! Although in today's world you should probably put a disclaimer on that or some idiot (not you, of course, Scotts
) would try it!

Congrats on your Doxie, Scotts! They are great little dogs! I have one, in addition to two big dogs, and it's all I can do to not adopt another Doxie.

I know all of you have been worried about what we did to bring the little guy here. We ended up driving to AZ to get him.
Here are some pictures of him last year.

Now pictures of his this year

I know it is hard to tell that he bulked up in this year so let me show you again a last year picture

Now this year.

He is only 2 years old so you may wonder how he got so much larger. Well my mom was worried that she had not been seeing him eat so she decided to feed him some people food.

YEP, nothing screams like perfect nutrition for you dog than a bowl full of Raviolios. She has some Spaghetti-Os for him also. Needless to say he is either going to learn to eat the dry food out of the bowl with the other dogs or he is going to get hungry. My wife has mentioned how she is a little worried because she has never seen him eat. I tell her, well we have seen him going in the yard so he must be he must be eating something.

What does this make, pet number 264 now?

OMG that is funny!
We only have 3 dogs, 2 cats and the fish. Thank-you.

My wife said I could have a bird before, but I don't think so now.

Ilene, you jinxed me. Literally 5 minutes after I replied to your post we got a call about fostering a pregnant Terrier. So we may have anywhere from 4 to 12 dogs tomorrow, depending a couple of things.
