AquaC Remora problems

Hey guys.
I just got my aqua c remora protein skimmer with a maxi jet 1200. I assembled the skimmer and pump and set it up. However, whenever I turn the pump on, foam starts to form in the middle shaft and when the collection cup is in, the collection cup fills up with water and white foam in less than 10 seconds. Is this happening because it is not broken in yet? It just doesnt seem right.

Did you adjust the cup?

Yes. I have it now so that it is barely collecting any foam because when it does collect a decent amount of watery foam, it overflows immediately. I am thinking that it is just breaking in. It is producing a ton of microbubbles though.

It is breaking in. You're right in thinking that. I was just making sure that you knew how to adjust it. There is probably not a problem with the skimmer. It should go away soon.

make sure that the skimmer isnt too deep in the water.. my euro reef did the same thing when i had it in too deep of water.. he range is usually 5-9"...also make sure that the return is fully open and the airflow is fully open.. dont adjust for the first couple of hours....

there isnt anything to adjust except the collection cup on the hob remora skimmer. it does take 2-3 weeks to break in.

I had bubble issues with my remora until I bought a skimmer box. That took care of the bubble problem but the box is big in the tank. I know don't use the box since the bubble issues are gone for some reason.
Hey OP, excess foaming can also be caused by certain additives. Not saying you are using any but it's something to be aware of. I wish I could remember the additive I used one time that made my remora fill up quickly and I had to empty it several times in an hour until it came under control.

Red Slime Remover will do that. I've never used the stuff but I've read that it will have that effect on a skimmer.

If you still haven't got it working right, call Aqua-C tech support; they are great. BTW; I think company tech help is a real resource for us and is not used enough. If a company doesn't have good tech help---I don't buy their stuff. Also, I agree with the above posts. Lots of additives can cause any skimmer to malfunction. If you think this is possible, run carbon for a few days.

Alright sounds good. Yeah, the manual said additives would do that. I am just thinking it needs to break in. If it continues after two weeks or so ill call aqua c. I have also heard they have costumer service.

Just another comment; I really like these skimmers and highly recommend them for smaller tanks that need a HOB skimmer. All skimmers need good maintenance, but with the Remora it is vital. I suggest you empty the collection cup and clean the riser tube every day, it justs takes a minute. A wadded up paper towel, pushed through the tube works perfectly on this model.

I agree that all skimmers need maintenance but some skimmers actually work a lot better if you leave the gunk in the tube for a good amount of time.
Anyway, while the Remora is good, I actually prefer the Octopus HOBs a little more. Then again this is just my opinion from my experience and bear in mind that every single skimmer is a little different and different skimmers work differently on different tanks.
I would recommend either.

True, I've noticed this too. I've always wondered what would happen if you "roughed up" those tubes a little with some sandpaper that would scratch the acrylic. I guess the gunk just needs a grip on these skimmers.

I have heard of people doing that. I don't think it would make a noticeable enough difference to tell conclusively if it was helpful. From what I've read, the people seem to have good results. I can't imagine it hurting. The only bad that will come from it is your tube won't be as beautiful. For something that is going to be covered in concentrated waste, I wouldn't mind. lol.

i have that skimmer and it takes a few weeks for the micro bubbles to totally stop.
just raise the collection cup so it does not fill up so fast
it will eventually work good
