UPDATE: Week #1
SG: 1.025
Temp: 80
PH: 8.0
CAL: 360
KH: 10
NO3: 40 no + so it went down a teeny, tiny, ittsy bitsy bit. LOL...It's going to be a long 6 to 8 weeks.
PO4: 0.5
PH is a tiny bit low, so I added PH booster and some liquid calcium. KH can go higher to 12 and still in the good area, so I can just add a little more than a pinch of reef booster with my RO top off water to keep the PH up better. The bubble coral and zoa needs calcium to grow, also the coraline eats it up, so I need to remember to dose that 2Xs a week as suggested on the bottle.
I am just aching to do a water change but it will affect the filters test claims. I did do a small water change (12g) just before I hooked up the filter and it's only been a week.

still it's an improvement.
 Don't make any judgment let the numbers over time tell you what is up...

LOL...That's why I say it's going to be a long 6 to 8 weeks. It's the water changes that bother me, we are so self-trained to do them that I feel like I'm neglecting the tank. I was doing weekly and bi-weekly changes just to keep the NO3 at 40+ and by the weeks end it was reading 80. So all things concidered there really was a good reading because at the end of this week it was still at 40 with no water change at all.
I am so tired of seeing bright orange in that test tube.......that I go and do a test on the SH tank just to reassure myself that the test can even read 0, so I know it can get there with this test kit.

Everything looks and acts exactly the same, but fish really don't care about nitrates and the few corals show no ill signs and look good. I did clean a bunch of dead empty shells out. I have added shells over the years for the hermits but I think they are about all gone but a few. I have been adding snails.
I have something to run by you guys....
My power heads bit the dust and I don't have the money to replace them. One had been acting up already and stopped a few times...I putzed with it and got it working, then the second one just stopped and burned itself out, it was sending a small electric current from it anyway and needed to be tossed.
They were old...but even the cheapest PHs will cost $70.00 each and to be honest I had 3, 1 died over 3 months ago and I was left with the two.
I have a utility pump I use for churning my new saltwater and pumping the water for water changes. I attached a 36 inch PVC pipe to it and drilled 6 holes so the water sprays pretty strong. I had a nano PH I pointed at the surface and the return also is pointed at the surface...it's moving pretty good on top. I turned the spray bar toward the lower part of the tank. I only have fish in there with a few mushrooms, a bubble coral frag and a good size patch of GSPs. It’s moving the corals a little so I know they have flow all the way to the bottom even on the side where it is nearly out of the water.
This was done as an emergency but it is working so well that I thought I might rig it up to be permanent. I was thinking a T joint in the center from the pump and two pipes running out from it. Right now I have everything rigged up with zip ties since the utility pump does not have magnets and I don’t trust those little suction cups to hold.
What I need is a way to hang the pump. If I create a hanger from PVC it will float. If I drill holes in the hanger tubes so it doesn’t float, I’m worried the water inside the pipes will get nasty… Below is a picture of what I have now for emergency (see how nice the top movement is) and below it is a drawing of what I have in mind .......What can I do to hang this? Oh and what type of paint can I use to color the white PVC ...I can't find grey.

I figured it out...They make plastic hooks for pipes with lots of holes for zip ties...it makes plenty of water movement so until I get the cash for new power heads I should be good for a while. I set the pipe low so it's more in the center pointed down a bit for the best flow. Now to find something to do with that horrible plastic blue background that's falling down.

LOL...that pump isn't going anywhere!

haha...nice one Flower. That was very Macgyver'ish of you. You make me proud.

I told you where you can find some gray pvc on your other thread. Go to home depot or lowes down the electrical isle. There you will find gray Sch 40 pvc that will fit the standard Sch 40 pvc fittings. Just ask for pvc conduit. People there will know what you mean.

LOL...Macgyver'ish ..... Hey when you don't have money for power heads you gotta do what you gotta do. It sure is an eye sore but it is getting the job done. I wanted some grey PVC (Lowes nor Home Depot had any) but couldn't find it and I'm just not sure about paint, so bone stark white is what I have, yep definitely getto. Since there isn't any corals to worry about CO2 is my only real concern. When I finally get my full retirement benifits I will have some serous back pay coming...I wll get me some fancy good stuff then, maybe MP10s. Such dreams keep me going.
If I find some grey PVC, I haven't checked Menards...I will swap it out.

UPDATE sort of....
I found the grey PVC (conduit) less than a dollar for a 10 foot pipe. I had the guy cut it for me. The caps and joints however are only in white so I got some black spray paint for plastic and painted them. I figure 24 hours before I can use them.
Also my 90g is looking so "clean" even the sand looks brighter. I am not getting quite so much on the glass to clean with my mag float either. Should I be concerned for my snails in there? I can grab them and put them in the 30g

UPDATE:
Sunday, June 19 2011 Week #3 test results:
PH - 8.0 (Taken early morning, lowest PH of the day)
KH - 12
Cal - 400
PO4 - 0.5
NO3 - 20
SG - 1.027
Temp - 80
It cost me the last of my spending cash but I ordered new tests kits from Seachem. I must admit that when my NO3 test read 80 my shrimp and other inverts were just fine, which made no sense. Calcium is a little low. For some reason PO4 remains at 0.5 and holding. PH goes up to 8.4 by the end of the day.
