I have a 55 gallon drum filled with SW at all times. I'm working on getting a 300 gallon drum and have it filled with saltwater at all times just in case.

Here is a great example of how being stupid can really justify keeping water on hand. I was doing some maintenance on the tank yesterday and saw that my ATO tank was getting low. I thought, hmmmm, I will fill that tomorrow after the WC. I wake up this morning and my little pump in my ATO is gurggling for its life. So before I can even get my coffee I roll the 35 into the room and fill the ATO tank. The 35 is back online and is filling back up as we speak.
So if you are like me and your stupid sometimes this is a great thread for you.

Everyone who said they didn't have backup, please do so if you can at all. My 100g tank leaked everywhere last night and if I didn't have 30g to put back in....
and why does it always happen in the middle of the night.....

The chiller sprang a leak. We haven't gone through it yet so we don't know the cause. Thank goodness the tank was plumbed with unions so we could just remove it with a twist and adjust the excess flow with a bleed off valve.
Suuuuuucks.

I just upgraded from 20g emergancy SW to 55g.
How long does it last before going bad, or is that even possible?
Does a power head or heater prolong the life?

Ouch, Cranberry! Sorry to hear about your leak!
I had heard that you can't keep saltwater mixed for more than 48 hours before it "goes bad"... so we just keep RO ready... Apparently I was misinformed.

If it's in a sealed water jug is it good indefinitely?

I've had stuff sealed and tucked away forever. I can't think of a reason why it would go bad if it is sealed. Just make sure to aerate before use.

I keep a 30 gallon tub of RO/DI at all times as well as a 5 gallon pail of ready to go salt water for my weekly W/C on my 55. When I change water I mix another batch for next week. I run powerheads 24/7 in both. Probably not necessary but there's something about stagnant water that bothers me.
