I'm very new to this, but from what i've read light is one of the main factors that will bring on algae. So if you can cycle your tank without light you might be able to avoid some sort of algae problem. My 2 cents.
I don't think you'll avoid an algae problem. Probably just postpone it. The nutrients will go somewhere besides in the water. The algae is just opportunistic.
