I'd buy the real "aquarium sand" like a fine grained type of Carribsea brand sand. Just don't pay extra for the wet stuff.

Okay that is great to know about this stuff. So now what I need to know is, the sand I have in my current 10 gal tank is regular aquarium sand seeded with some live sand from the aquariums at our local fish store.
Now when i go to do my 25 gal, what kind of sand should I do for there, can I put that same regular white sand like in the 10 gal and then again get some more of the "real" live sand and put that in with it?
The sand in the 10 gal will also be going into the 25 gal as well.
Are you all ready for this, that supposed "live" sand I was first refering to is a 20lb bag for .....sit down now.....$49.99 CDN..... :scared: I just about s..t when I seen this so this is good to know that it is only wet sand with bacteria in it.
Thanks so much for the clarification...... :joy:

define "regular aquarium sand"... the sand for freshwater tanks (that some ppl use to root their plants) is different stuff. You want aragonite sand. The bag should be obviously labled for reef and/or saltwater tanks. And you should see aragonite somewhere on there.

Does anynone know where one could procure live sand (the one with all the living copepods, worms, etc.) in the Miami area?
This live sand is just sand taken straight from the ocean floor, right?
Thank you.

So Bang Guy -- Your wife gives you the whole basement to build your lagoon!!! Wowwie..
I wish stocking live sand would be easy.. I mean.. I;ve spent $$$ on my live rocks and sand -- (i know many have spent even more money based on their tank sizes - picture posts)
But I wish it would be as easy as going home to Hawaii and just scooping sand from the beach and grabbing a few rocks here and there and bringing it to my temporary new home in Kentucky!! I would save LOTS of Money!!!!
I'm gonna go home for a visit

SOON --
actually -- if I do this would it work???????? (sand) then let live stock add bacteria to it. :notsure:
:notsure:
I am gonna post some pictures, have done snorkling before I left and after I got into this addicting hobby. :happyfish :happyfish

Hispaniola,
There's a Taboo associated with removing lava rocks from Hawaii related to a goddess named Pele. Many people have had bad luck after taking the rock from her site. If you go to the big island, Hawaii they have a display of letters and rocks in which many people have mailed them back with apologies.
There was an episode on the Brady Bunch that featured this.

The "lava rocks" sold at ***** are not volcanic in origin at all and are ok... real volcanic lava rocks contain minerals that will kill your tank.
