I'm thinking about building a plywood square and putting sand in it to get my ls going for my 240 and a friends 180. I just had a few question for you. Black pond liner is ok right?
I was thinking about 8ft long by 3ft wide. How deep would you recommend?
Second I plan on just having a few pieces of lr in there. Do I need any micro algae?
How deep should I make the sand?
I don't need any special lighting do I? Especially if I don't have any calurpa in there.

45 mil Firestone EPDM is the liner I used. If the sand is to be transferred at a later date you have a problem IMO. If it's deeper than 1" you're going to build up an anoxic area that can be trouble to move. If you have it less than 1" you're not going to have much sand for your aquariums.
For the size you are considering I strongly suggest you look into the Rubbermaid 300 gallon containers. They are pre-drilled, tough as nails, and very safe.

Thanks Bang, So you suggest that I put a large container close to where my tank is going to be and put a dsb in that? Then just plum it into my filtration when I get everything going? Ok I can do that. If I can't find a 300g container what would be the smallest I could go and still be effective? Also what would the flow rate be in something like this? Thanks again

I believe the smallest effective sand bed would be about 2 square feet. Anything larger would of course be more effective. Is that the question?? I think anything in therange of 4 - 10X turnover is fine.

the 300 gal tank is round apx 4-5 feet across the top not like the one in the photo i think that,s a 100 gal

Hey guys, If you have a feed supply nearby (ie. Agway) check there. I just picked up 2 - 300gal ones at a local Agway for my LFS. It was around $200 for a 300gal. Best thing is, NO SHIPPING. They are expensive to ship.
A 300 gal one is 25 1/2" high and almost 6' round(across).
They are round, not oval.
