i just added a 5# piece of Brazilian live rock from lfs (btw i know this lr legal and environmentally friendly. this lfs is very good about this kind of stuff) but anyway the lr is covered in barnacles and i was wondering if they need anything special. this piece of rock is just full of really cool life

Barnacles are filter feeders so you will need to provide them with phytoplankton, there are several foods available that will help. From what I have heard from others, they will not survive long in the tank because they require so much food. Enjoy them while you have them, and if you can keep them alive by being creative, let everyone here know about it. If anyone else knows how to keep barnacles alive in a tank, please jump in, if it's possible, someone here has done it.

Barnacles need a constant supply of zooplankton. They are very very difficult to maintain in a closed environment. I'd suggest you spend some time enjoying them while they are still around. Sorry I don't have better news.

What do they look like? I have something that has made it's home on the shell of my clam and someone said that it might be a barnacle.

the are 1/8 to 1/4 inch across. they open and close about every 5 seconds and almost look like small feather dusters. they are really cool, i guess it is a good thing i feed phyto or zoo at least once a day. thanks for the advice. and if anyone lives nar nashua nh i email me about where to get this great live rock and other goodies

Barnacles can be fun to watch sometimes with thier feather shooting in and out.
I've had some belly up, so to speak, on me already.
I get them on the large snails I catch. We have a never ending supply here, they are on everything.
I guess we can be glad they cannot live long in a closed environment. They would take over your tank in less than a year.

this brazilian rock is the best i've seen, that didn't come out of someone elses tank
