Has anyone ever heard about the basket starfish? Good or bad, and is it reef safe?? It is so cool looking, but I cannot find anything on them.
Thanks Dennis

Basket Stars are not impossible. They need to be target fed as often as possible once you find a food that they like.
Feather Stars are definately impossible to keep. I only mention it because they are often confused.

I had a bunch of little baskets that came in on a sea fan....never tried target feeding...they pretty much all died, or can really really hide well.:D :D I believe these guys are tough to keep, but not impossible like feather stars. The difference is that basket stars CAN be fed, but feather stars can not be fed......they need things to mass reproduce in your tank basically, and to keep one long term is near impossible for the common hobbiest. We do have a member here who had good success with a rather large basket star.....perhaps he will catch this thread and help out. I don't consider a basket star a good choice for someone new to the hobby, but it is possible to keep one. I believe if my LFS ever has a nice specimen.....I might give it a go as well.

I'm just correcting my previous post a bit. Basket Stars are not impossible... but I believe they are quite difficult even for advanced hobbiests.

I think Sammy may be speaking about me.
I had a basket star. Kept it for about 11 months. It was a wonderful creature............................if you like watching it in the middle of the night with a flashlight, and staying up WAYYYYY past your bedtime so you could feed it when it did come out. They're nocturnal, you see. And then trying to find something that it will eat is always fun. Mine finally decided teeny weeny guppies were it's favorite, even though that's not it's normal diet.
I kept it alive and fed, but finally decided sleep was also a good thing and donated it to the Shedd Aquarium here in Chicago where it now has it's own exhibit.
They are fascinating creatures that are better off in the ocean.

AMEN! Best possible answer.....
Not impossible, but really do not belong in captivity, and difficult to enjoy.
