Once your tank is cycled properly using which ever method, you should be good with both clown or chromis. If I remember correctly, they are in damsel family.

IMO Chromis are far too delicate to be a starter fish.
I agree, IMHO Chromis are lousy fish. They say to buy a bunch of them because they school, then they chase the smallest one until it dies and so on until you only have one. Not very colorful either. I've never had any luck with them and I never lose a fish. I'm not a big fan of damsels either, mean little buggers.
A popular combination of fish for a small tank like that is two clowns and maybe a half blue damsel or firefish. Just put the damsel in last if you go that way.

For a little fish, a Damsel is truely beautiful, but they are devils and I would never have one. I agree that a very hardy starter fish would be 2 clowns. I would choose an Orchid Dottyback or Rayal Gramma to go along with them, not Chromis.

Speaking of a CUC, where in the cycle are you right now. Did you have an algae bloom. I'm adding a piece of raw shrimp tonight to start my cycle. Just wondering if its a good idea to add the CUC before the percs. Maybe give them a week to clean up before adding the percs? Any opinions?

I usually add cuc before the fish and after the ammonia spike dies down but that's just me and to each to their own. :)

The cuc will eat leftover food I guess until the algea starts to bloom. But I wasnt adding them today,my ammonia is still showing. On another note....yesterday I resealed my 20 gallon and by tomorrow I should be able to add water to check for leaks and if all is good I can transfer everything from my 10 to my 20 & maybe turn my 10 into a sump refugium thing u guys talk about.

What I am saying is no fish should be sacrificial.

I agree 100%+++++++++++
Which is why I recommend starting the tank with a large amount of macro algae like chaetomorphia.
In that case even if there is not a single aerobic bacteria to control ammonia, the macro algae will consume the ammonia preventing any stress to the fish. and not to mention consuming the fish's carbon dioxide while returning oxygen. then the bacteria can build up and the macros will eventually get its nitrogen from the resulting nitrates.

You should consider a no crab CUC. I've banished most of mine to the refugium and the snails could not be more grateful.

when you add a cuc you are supposed to put in some empty shells bigger than the cuc
That was my next question!
What is a typical CUC comprised of. I'm working with 30 gallons of DT and 15 gallons of sump volume. I've heard 1 CUC member per gallon on average. Based on DT or total volume? I'm interested in what you guys have enjoyed and not enjoyed in your tanks.

I like to have a variety of snails as the primary CUC. This is typically incompatible with Hermit Crabs.

check out reefcleaners, you can send them an email based on your tank setup, and they will give you what they think you should have as a cuc.

If your feeling adventurous get youself a Fuzzy Chiton for the CUC. They are sereiously weird looking but man do they do a great clean up job. I have two and they each stay in their own area and keep it spotlessly clean. My LFS store special ordered mine under $10.
