I am prepared to get flamed, but I have a Zune and my wife has a new Ipod. I prefer the Zune. Reason, it plays music, podcasts, photos, videos, and has an FM radio. Also, it has wireless capabilities built in. A little pricey, but worth it IMHO. good luck on your search, gandalf.

iRiver Clix - 2nd Gen...
This is one of those things where you are going to get a different answer from everyone.
I like the new Zune as well, but I dont think it qualifies as reasonably priced.

If you have over 80gb of music like me and hate Apple and Microsoft products. (Their functionality is terrible) I would suggest an Archos 605. They are a little more pricey but what other Portable Media Player can you plug into your TV and record movies and shows. They make them anywhere from 30gb to 160gb

considering the Archos 605 160g touch screen is $399 plus and as stated before you can plug it into a TV and record shows. I think you got ripped off MiaHeatLvr....especially since its a fryPod....BTW the screen on it is about 2-3x the size of the 5th gen iPod video's screen....plus it doesn't have the stupid scroll wheel

I am a staunch Apple supporter, I love how Apple makes itunes and everything seem to go together smoothly, I like the Leopard OS system. I know and gladly accepted what I paid so how was I "ripped off" I have always had good luck and feeling with IPODS.

That thing is freakin HUGE though! Can you actually fit that in your pocket like you can with the iPods or Sandisk models? I had an Archos Jukebox a few years ago. It was great as an MP3 player even though the interface just plain sucked. When it died on me about a year or so ago I ended up replacing it with a 60Gb iPod video. I didnt want to buy an Apple. I was actually really close to getting one of the Creative Labs units but iPod seems to have the lock on the accessory market which is why I went with one. I've been incredibly happy with it since then and dont regret my decision one bit. I got mine a few days before the 80gb model came out so all the stores were discounting them.

It still fits in the pocket. iPods click wheels are way to sensitive. I have a 60g video right now that has already died and been sent back for a replacement. Now the new one has errors half the time it syncs (or even charges for that matter). It decided it wanted to erase all my music off it and re-add it to it and I ended up w/ a blank iPod for 3 weeks before I could get it to sync right again. I just hate the fact that they feel they have to make it so itunes is the only program that will work with it. iTunes is horrid. I am disappointed in myself for not waiting and buying something better online.

Sounds like you ended up with a bad batch or something. I've had mine over a year now with no problems. I also bought 3 nanos for the guys that were in my wedding party 6 months ago and they are all running with no problems.

Everyone I know that has a 5th Gen or newer is having problems syncing them. Its all in itunes, I don't think they are running enough tests before they release new versions (it seems like every week they have a new update for it)
I haven't personally bought my Archos yet but I will be doing that in the next month or so. I need the extra storage though. Plus with all the things you can do with the new one compared to an iPod. I know Apple says you can now buy songs on your iPod but thats about the only new feature I remember and I don't buy music from itunes anyways.
The sound quality is horrible, I even notice a difference between music ripped with itunes vs. WMP. Apple isn't really concerned with quality sound yet, whereas I am. Theres a huge difference between playing a cd in my car and plugging in my iPod.

this thread is garbage.
Everyone likes something different.
I have an 20 gb iPod photo. It plays music just fine.

I would just get a phone that plays mp3s - one less thing to carry around.
I had a 30GB iPod video and I never had any issues with it - I now have an iPhone that works just fine as well. It ultimately comes down to what you think is reasonable pricewise and what features fit what you need/want from your mp3 player. I like the 605, but it's too big for an mp3 player and too small to watch video on...it has Wifi, but they charge you an extra $30 for that.

It will fit in my pocket on the way to class and thats all that matters to me. I don't intend to use Wifi on it. I will never be so desperate to use the internet that I need to carry it with me. If I ever do get that desperate than I should be shot. I don't really intend to watch video on the 605 either. If anything I will dock it to my TV and play it on there. I am in college and my primary use for an mp3 player is to make my walk to class/wait between classes seem faster.
My biggest concern its that I have around 87gb of music on my pc right now. I want it all on one mp3 player.
Apple still has not impressed me with sound quality. They may have cheap tricks like touch screen and downloading music on an iPod but to me those are worthless. I don't use my phone for anything more than a phone so why would I use my mp3 player for anything more than an mp3 player.
