Best way to control Phosphate

Give us some info about your tank.

Size, parameters including phosphate, filtration, what you feed and how often and when you do water changes and how much, etc.

Adding chemicals to control water quality might be an easy temporary fix but not in the long run.

Describe how you are doing water changes- how often and how many gallons- and what salt and pure water you are using.

Are you having problems with algae, cyano, dinoflagellates or other nutrient related issues?

Putting GFO in a filter bag greatly inhibits it's ability to remove phosphate. A tumbler, such as the two little fishies phosphate reactor would be better suited for GFO use.

An 8g water change is approximately 22% per month. You might want to increase it to about 11gallons per month for a 30% water change. I'm glad that you are using distilled water instead of tap water - that's great.

How often do you clean your canister filter? Canister filters can be a source of nitrate and phosphates over time if not properly maintained. I personally don't recommend canister filters for a saltwater aquarium because of nutrient problems.

When you do your water changes, are you blowing off your rocks with a turkey baster and removing the detritus out of the system via filter pad an hour or so after it settles?

I hate to ask, but could you be more detailed and give more information about your system. It's kind of hard to guess on some of these issues... What are you feeding? About how much are you feeding twice per day? What other equipment are you using?
