I have had my blue hippo tang for about 2 weeks. It is about 2 inches long. During the day she will rub up against the live rock like she is rutting. Is this normal?

no thats not normal. it will die in about one month between three months unless u cure it of its parasites. ur tang has ick the most annoying of all things to cure.

How exactly did you come up with this diagnoses and time line

Wow. Agressive response. Anyway, it could be ick. You will need to really step up feeding now. Are you using algae sheets?

if it is ick IMO more feeding by which i assume you mean enriched feeding is an after the fact treatment if the fish is infected its immune system is already taxed and again IMO hypo or copper is called for

Metronidazole is in fact shown to be effective in killing certain parasites. Ick being one of them but I do believe you need a prescription to obtain it

Good to know. what is your dosing routine, can you test for levels. Since it is also is a powerful antibiotic have you seen any detrimental effects to your bio filtration

the only thing it seems to mess with is the protein skimmer, for about a week(the time i used it) my skimmer blew white bubbles but after running carbon to get rid of the yellow it was fine, but then again im stuck with a seaclone skimmer,
also i adapted my style of using it, when i feed my fish i put it in with thier food(crush the pill into powder and slightly wet) and then feed them, it seems to work quicker that way, also supplementing with garlic helps

My fish don't have ich. I have inspected each one and I don't see any white spots on any of them. I don't believe it is ich.

OK ,lets take a step back and look at your situation.Ich is very sneaky. My first question would be did you QT every single thing that went into your tank from day one, including said hippo?.I know who does that, right.Well,i do KNOW,i learned the hard way.Ich has a way of hiding out and then bam.

ok lets go all the way back. the only symptom was scratching. Fish will scratch for many reasons. to dislodge food to just scratch a itch or the result of a parasitic irritation from ick and others est. You can not presume that because our fish is seen scratching it has ick.

You are correct, but when someone says, i have a blue hippo, for 2 weeks, scratching, and not saying its in a QT or not,it does raise alot of red flags...

Okay, let me clear some things up. 1st - You are correct, he is not in QT. 2nd - He is not rubbing constantly. He does it maybe once an hour or once every couple of hours. 3rd - Not sure if this matters or not, but he only rubs in 1 spot on the live rock and at that spot my powerhead is aimed at. He likes the current I think.

Ive had 2 blue hippos durring my time as a saltwater fan....both contracted ich....I think these fish are just drawn to get it from time to time, most people I talk to say they have blue hippos that break out once every 2 months or so. My 2 cases the first one caused the hippo to die :( the second time resulted in crashing my whole tank....I now have a uv sterolizer that kills most parasites in the water and has worked very very well Im thinking of getting a blue hippo soon to try agian. My advice is to make sure u keep up with feeding always have fresh alge sheets! Also treatment with medication should be used in a separate tank if you have a qt tank unless you dont have inverts in ur display tank. My input is if your gonna have one of these fish your going to have to deal with ich some time or another lol just try and keep him fed and his immune system should take care of it :)
