I have to rewire the whole thing top to bottom it only has a sixty amp service with four fuses. we turned on two lights and a radio clicked on a third light and blew a fuse. I start rewiring it tommorrow, I'm going to have a designated dual pole 40amp breaker just for my tank (this means pretty much no matter how much juice it pulls it wont kick out)
This house was built in 1900. so she needs a little work......

I would be careful doing that. I am an electrician and if you draw to much ampreage off the wire you risk catching the wire on fire. I ran 2- 20 amp circuits to my tanks. that is pleny of power if you divide it up between your lights and pumps.
I would hate to see you loose your house so soon after buying it.
Be careful with the power and ask an electrician if you need help with a problem. most will be more than happy to give you advice for free.
Congrats on the house by the way..

beautiful house. both my parents are realtors, so i know a nice house and good price. if you lived in strongsville ohio (where i do) the house would have gone for 120,000$, and you could have sold it to our historic village for about 280,000$. its a place in our city where we have like...5-6 buildings. they buy buildings built in strongsville 1900 and back.
nice house, have fun with it, it brings a sense of pride to own your own house., celebrate by buying a new fish tank to go with it!

I hear you there. my moms husband is a master electrician he and I have discussed this I'm going to use the same gauge wire you run main power with and set up a "subpanel" or something like that. he knows more about it than I do, I just pound nails for a living, I'm not much of one for playing with electricity. I'm doing the pulling, hes doing the connecting and telling me what to run where. he's also gonna show me what he's doing so I know, for future reference.

I feel better now that you replied. I was sweating pretty hard when I read what you were saying.
I didn't set a sub-panel for mine. I just ran the circuits is needed to run. I am in the process of going solar on half of my house, including the fish room. I should have the solar done by next winter. I have other things I need to tack care of before I spend anymore money on my tanks for now.
I can't wait until it is all set up though.
Good luck and keep us posted up the progress of everything...

$60,000 is a steal even for around here, honestly they could have gotten 75,000 just because of the neigborhood its in. no matter what shape the house was in. I got most of the wire pulled and labled today, gonna finish the rest tommorrow, gotta install boxes and place the new breaker panel. should be getting the carpet for the master bedroom on sunday, along with the new queen size bed with bookshelf headboard. if this 25 below zero wind chill ever goes away I might get the roof redone next weekend. to cold to get up there now.

SInce you mentuioned dormer check this shower out, I need to put a dormer on this spring, I cant stand up in this shower, I'm 6'2" the wall starts sloping at about 4feet. I'm gonna build a custom stand up shower stall with a bench and built in shelves because my girl insists on having at least 4 different types of shampoo and conditioner available at any second.
